I have the PIAA's in my RG and LOVE them. Started using the PIAA bulbs back on my SG and for the $45 they cost I feel they are one of my best mods I've done.
For the record, HD offers their LED light in both clear and black, IIRC.
"As good or better for cheaper"? What you'll find with that question is lots of folks who've upgraded to lots of stuff, but few have done that and the HD LED light as well, so they have no basis for comparison. So, the question will remain unanswered, essentially.
Personally, when it comes to such critical safety-related items as headlights, I don't tend to go the bargain-basement route - the stakes are too high. I will say that since I installed my HD clear LED headlight, I notice a lot less cars pulling out from side streets into my right of way, and the thing is much brighter than the stock light. I consider it money well spent. I'd do it again.
+1, although I have the HD, I believe the TL works well, also, there is always an alternative to HD. The one thing I do know, it does light up the night! Even in the day, I have pulled into places and had others come up and ask what light I am runnning, they thought it was very bright in the sunshine. It was expensive, but I have seen more deer on the side of the road than I ever have, I don't think there are more deer, I just think I wasn't lighting them up before. Of course, now that's scary!

That underscores my "safety related" point. Actually, here in central Texas, the deer problem is so acute, especially at night when they're more active, that I don't ride at night anymore if I can avoid it. I've already hit 2, and wife's hit one. But at least, with this light, if one's nearby, I'm more likely to see it. The saying goes "Don't take life too seriously, nobody gets out alive", but I don't want to chance being taken out by a deer.

Rode in this morning and what a difference. I could see much better, everything really stood out. I saw more wildlife this morning than I have in the last 3 months. I'm glad I did this upgrade and recommend it to anyone who is looking for more light.
