I have 2 HD leather jackets and one pair of HD chaps. IMO the leather is very good quality. My jackets have seen a lot of miles and seem to be holding up very well with little to no fade in the leather.
Segue: It is a sad commentary but we have no else to blame but ourselves. This is a quote straight from an EPA publication.
"There are approximately 111 leather tanning facilities in the United States. However, not every
facility may perform the entire tanning or finishing process. Leather tanning and finishing facilities are most prevalent in the northeast and midwest states; Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and Wisconsin account for almost half of the facilities. The number of tanneries in the United States has significantly decreased in the last 40 years due to the development of synthetic substitutes for leather, increased leather imports, and environmental regulation."
HD's quality is good; however, way over priced (you're paying for the HD labeling). Take a look at leatherup.com before you buy. Quality leather (especially chaps) and they provide customer reviews that were really helpful with sizing. Great prices.
Leather is something I shop around for. Unless you feel like you will fall off your bike if you dont have on HD leather you can find some nice stuff out there.
My exp is there chaps are crap. Paid almost 300 and the dam things fell apart. Baught next pair from Fox creek and got more than I paid for MHO. http://www.foxcreekleather.com/

Its the same sad story in Europe. I'm wondering if these environmental regulations were created to give work to Asian countries? Wife and I have HD leather jackets; mine was assembled Indonesia, I can only hope they were designed elsewhere because I see no future for our grandchildren as their parents (our kids) are already lurking social welfare.
