Previously to this little trip Only heard the occasional pinging every now and then.
Took off on a afternoon run with a tank full of 94 octane gas in my 2012 FLHTK. Same place i always get gas. Temp was about 86F. On the way home, it started pinging like crazy, doing 120km/hr or 75 m/h.
Very slight inclines on mostly flat interstate. Sounded like marbles in the top end....dropped down to 5th without it stopping.....
Pulled over at a rest area, had a leak and a smoke and got back on it.
Pinging was mostly gone but not completely.
Stopped at my dealer before going home that day and asked about there take on this, and the answer was.....you're not the only one with that complaint....apparently a lot of 2012's are pinging at times and HD has not given them a "fix" yet. Not even an answer!
Any other 2012 owners with the same issue?
Its not just the 2012s that ping. Gotta go back to maybe the 07s or earlier. Write a Thank You Letter to the EPA expressing your satisfaction with what they are doing to the internal combustion engine. Only real solution is a tuner. Or dont ride the bike.
Yup it was either get rid of the bike ( that aint happenin) or put a tuner on my bike.....didnt have much of a choice....got most of it out ( ping) couple more tweaks and I should have it.
The coling effect of motion has a limit, contrary to poular belief, higway speed is when your engine gets the hottest, the rear cylinder can easily exceed 300F during state operations at highway speed. As the FCS has improved to provide significant cooling up to 80 MPH (at least) I have no ping running 89 octane at 95F ambient temp, and the tune is "stock" type with the "lean" cruise range extended to 3250 RPMs, not saying everyone will have the same results but without the fans it pings at "roll on" when it gets hot.
