Check out American Custom. They will sell you a stock Harley header pipe minus the cat for $199 after you trade them your pipe with the cat in it. Not as cheap as DIY but a lot cheaper than the V&H pipes if all you are looking to do is cure the heat problem.
Having a de-catted header made a noticable difference for me in heat reduction. The mid frame air deflector does help also, but I really think when all is said and done its the combination of a stage 1, a good tune to get rid of the factory lean condition (or a tuning device that will do autotune), and a header minus the cat that all combine to significantly reduce the heat.
Decatted my pipe, had the stage 1 on it when I bought it. I truly felt better performance on the test drive after putting the pipe back on. Gets better every time I ride it. Sounds much better too.
Decatted my 2012 sg and the seat of the pants feel says more torque and hp but no numbers to verify. The heat is a lot less, 106 degree days in traffic with no problems. Did the cat at 100 miles and have put 1400 on it since then with no problems.
I heard Fulsac has a new header pipe called the sportpipe. Priced at 250.00
I looked at that pipe Ron..looks like you need to return your stock header within 30 days to get that price. Not sure if that stock heat shields would fit as the pipe does look a little funky. It probably does though
If you are going to self decat your header do it because you either want to reduce heat or make your bike sound louder. Don't do it for an increase in power. Most of the things I have read show little if any power increase, other than a few seat of the pants type comments which are real tough to prove.
The after market headers are a different animal and it sounds like you can expect some power improvements with some of them.
IRT "American Custom" - keep on top of your orders/shipment. Good vendor, but had to contact them a couple of times to get my refund after sending in my old/stock pipes & it was a few weeks after their grace period. I was getting a little worried, but bet they're busy & couldn't keep up.
I've put the jackpot 2-1-2 pipes on both of my road kings - tremendous difference in heat !!! Do it and don't think twice. I have a big burn scar on my leg from that stupid cat! The stock heat shields fit too. Joe
