FYI my 09 Ultra was pinging in 6th speed between 2750 and 3000 rpm which is around 50%-60% throttle. It wasn't particular hot when it happened, like 180F-190F. I have a PC-V. I didn't touch the ignition table but I added 5 in the corresponding fuel cells and pinging was cured.
My bike pings and even after it was at the HD dealer I bought it from, they had it two hours and did the vTune/data logging thing.
Got the bike, they said issue of ping gone, and good to go.
I anticipated no ping after the dealer supposedly fixed the ping issue. My luck ran true to course.
It still pings, and the dealer has no dyno to tune with.
When they vtuned it at 1000 miles it did not ping at all. WTF?
Fuel, I run 91 or better fuel and non corn when I can find it, but is $$$ like $4.19 last check at station 20 miles from me in Idaho.
If I sell my ride soon, no need to bother with screwing around with bike at all.

Reason: I can't type
I do know that when I had a little bit of pinging, I made the changes recommended by the PV when updating a tune at the completion of a data logging session. Hasn't pinged since, regardless of engine temp, air temp or load. Also, maybe we have a better quality of fuel in the Northeast.
When I bought mine bran spank me new I had them do a stg 1 heavy breather V&H touring power header and HI-out put slip ons.....and it pinged like nothing I've ever seen( granted it was in the 100+ range) rode it about 150 miles. Took it home took the lowers off, and put 91 octane in it and 1300 miles later havent had a pinging issue since...
Power Commander has "Accelerator Pump" option wher you can add 0-99% more fuel in each cell for a programmable number of engine revolutions after you reach a setpoint throttle crack. Mine is set at 15% more fuel for 2 engine revolutions after more thn 20% throttle crack. This little squirt of fuel is helpful in eleminating any ping or preignition by richening the AFR for a short burst.
'12 FLHTK 5K mi, K&N Filter, V&H Power Duals, V&H Monster Ovals, Power Commander V running prescribed program, Optional Accelerator Pump Feature, Extended RPM, and 4 degrees timing advance in most higher RPM and throttle positions with no Ping using 91 Octane or Higher fuel and she will chug all day long @ 1500 rpm in 6th gear doing 35 MPH
I cant wait to get a Sage 1 setup on my 12 SG so that mine will ping too. $300 dolars for a dyno tune? WTF? I'm going to by me a freaking dyno, should have it paid of in about a month.
What is wrong with the bikes that I buy? My 12 RGC with the 103 is the smoothest and quietest TC that I have had. Zero pinging during the 3,600 miles that I have put on it so far. No heat issue either. Goes into neutral up or down like butter. Idling in the garage no top end noise either.
I just plain feel left out. So much for the Harley brotherhood.
Just because a person does not hear the ping does not mean it is not pinging. I have a TTS and can run scandata for knock retard and for those who don't hear it don't be so sure it is not there.
