Kinda what I thought when I saw the reading. Man that's low. I thought oil had to get to at least 212 to vaporize the water out of it.
Water will evaporate at any temperature, just faster as temperature increases. There's nothing magical about 212°F except that water boils there at sea level. My old Evo ran 160° max OT during winter months and after a normal 5k change interval I had my oil lab tested. The TBN, value for determining the oil's ability to absorb acids and water, was still within safe tolerances. The summer test was somewhat better, but 180° is about as hot as that bike's oil ever got in hot weather, even in traffic. It didn't even have an oil cooler installed.
I think you're onto something ref the oil spraying up onto the bottom of the pistons/cylinders in Twin Cams. That's gonna collect alot of heat right there. This probably explains the higher operating oil temps in TC motors. Personally i think i'd prefer the oil spray up into that area and deal with the higher oil temps as I'd think this will lend towards long engine life with improved lubrication in that area. (Yes H-D should equip these TC's with an oil cooler as standard equipment, but you know how that goes.)
