Default Flat Tire = about $325??

I posted this in the Tech forum but thought I might get more feedback here -

All righty, I have had a bike most of the time for the past 50 years, can't remember the last time I had flat. A little over 2 weeks ago I bought a new Road King. I went out today to go for a ride and the rear tire was flat. I picked up some king of screw. I pulled out the screw and put in a temporary plug (a slime worm). I did a little research and it looks like I am about to be out $325 or so for a new tire. The bike (tire) has less that 500 miles on it. Any safe alternatives? The local dealers are closed on Monday so I have a little time to ponder. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if your supposed to, but I have patched the tire from the inside and rode until the tire needed normal replacement. If you want a new tire, you should be able to find one on line for less than $200 shipped and have an indy install it for you for around $50, or they may already have your size tire and do it for around $200 - $250, the dealer is usually the most expensive place to go.

Assuming you used a plug then you have cast wheels, yes? Also assuming this is on your new '12 King then the tire should have quite a bit of life left? You can always throw a tube in until the tire is at the end of it's life. Another alternative is to buy a tire from Dennis Kirk or Jake Wilson, etc. for a lot cheaper and change it yourself or bring it to an Indy and save some cash.

Get a tire on line like Dennis Kirk , pull the wheel yourself , still going to run about $150 - $200 , but if it is a NEW bike I think I would let the dealer do it for future warranty stuff, then hope it is another 50 yrs before you have another one

That sucks. Last year, first day of a 7 day, 3600 mile ride I get a flat around 4:00pm. Nearest Harley dealer 80 miles away. I plug the tire but dont feel real comfortable with it. The stealer charges me $220 for the tire and $80 to mount and balnce. Cost me another $100 to keep the mechanic there past closing.(We got there 5 minutes late) At least me and my buddy were able to continue our ride.
I just replaced my tires on my Ultra with Elite 3s. I ended up getting them at the shop I bought my dirt bike at. They matched the lowest internet price I found and mount and balnced on the bike for $75 a tire. Shop around for tires for sure.

Just stumbled upon this while researching this thread

http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/info....asp?id=13#tip

This was obtained from the official Dunlop website:

"Some punctures in motorcycle tires may be repaired.

Dunlop recommends only permanent plug-patch repairs of small (maximum 1/4-inch diameter) tread area punctures from within the dismounted tire by a qualified tire repair shop or motorcycle dealer. Never perform an exterior repair and never use an inner tube as a substitute for a proper repair. Speed should not exceed 50 mph for the first 24 hours after repair and the repaired tire should never be used over 75 mph. Check inflation pressure after tire cools for at least three (3) hours following run-in, or sooner if air loss is suspected.

No form of temporary repair should be attempted because secondary damage caused by a penetrating object may not be detected and tire or tube deflation may occur at a later date.

Dunlop does not recommend the use of liquid sealants. These are a form of temporary repair, and they may adversely affect ply material and mask secondary damage caused by a penetrating object. Reliance upon sealants can result in sudden tire failure and accident."
(End of Quote)

I've "tubed" several tires in my life without issue. I also have never been concerned with patches on the rear, but never trusted a patch on a front tire. All that having been said, I always carry patches and a small compressor. ( I'm never spending the night in Harlan,Ky again!)

Many thanks for the replies. All local dealers & Indies are closed Monday and after that I will be out of town for a couple of days. I plan to address my problem on Thursday of Friday so I can ride next week-end. I will post back with what I did. Thanks again!

sweet but how much was the tire warranty, how many years, and how often do you get a flat, if at all. Interesting to know if you get one flat during your warranty period how much you actually paid for that tire or is it cheaper to pay as you go??
