Default Throttle Problem???

I'm seriously starting to regret the decision to get rid of the old Dyna's and buy this 08 Ultra. So here we go....

We were on a trip Thursday and bike was running fine. We pull up to a stop light. When we take off the check engine light comes on and the bike goes dead. Luckily we were able to drift over to the side of the road and turned the bike off and back on and it restarted. We get off on the exit and it happens again. The bike check engine light comes on and the bike goes into limp mode with no throttle response. It happens 3 times and then no problems the rest of the trip there. We thought maybe it was overheating for some reason. It ran fine the rest of Thursday and all day Friday.

Saturday we are out and it happens again. But this time we had more trouble getting it to start. Again, check engine light, goes to idle and no throttle. Finally after about 10 minutes it fires back up and run fine the rest of the day.

Sunday we start heading home and after about 10 miles it happens again. We were able to get her going but only for about 20 more miles. Then we were on the side of the road and Sean is now tearing into the bike trying to find a problem. He tried disconnecting the PC auto tune. He tried disconnecting the PC. No luck. He checked connection, checked fuel lines, etc. Then it fires up and sounds great. Put the seat back on and saddle bag and cancel the tow truck and get ready to take off...guess what?! Yep, we didn't get anywhere. Called the tow truck back and had the bike towed to the nearest HD Dealership. They were getting ready to close and wouldn't be open until Tuesday. They pulled the codes and it threw 8 codes all related to the throttle by wire in some manner. We figure since he was messing with it the bike stored a bunch of codes. We didn't want to leave the bike 2 hours from home for 2 days so a friend came and got us and loaded her on a trailer and got us home. Funny thing is after the bike sat for an hour it fired right up and Sean was able to ride around the parking lot and pull her on the trailer just fine. Then when we got home it fired up and he rode it into the garage. Next day....DEAD. Won't even start now.

Looking around here and some other boards it seems to be an ongoing issue with these throttles. But it seems it can be anything from cleaning the contacts to replacing the ECM or wiring harness. Any suggestions on how to narrow it down as we no longer have an warranty. Anyone had this happen to them?

Sean did clean the contacts and grease them but it didn't do anything.

first step is to remove and reset the connector to the throttle body. ( at 7 o'clock as you look at the TB from the right side of the bike)

next is to cycle the ing on/off waiting for the fuel pump to stop 4 or 5 times- with the switch in run position and not touching the throttle at all ( and learning to use the ign. switch rather than the kill switch to turn off the motor- with the right hand , so that the throttle is at "zero" when the ecm looses power and powers up again.

on a bike with a piggyback tuner, removing and/or reseting the tuner connection can be the fix.

if bars have been changed ( so someone rewiring the throttle) that can be a problem

some aftermarket grips ( kury) have been reported to have the internal mating gear break loose, causing no or intermittant throttle control

those would be my first guesses

I know he's cycled the on/off to reset the ECM. He does have the Power Commander & Auto Tune installed. He's tried disconnecting them.

Sean picked up a few of the cheaper fixes today to try them first. Let's hope one of them work. I've read it is usually either the connector behind the air cleaner or the connector to the ECM that's the issue.

The pins going to your air cleaner are probably fretted and need to be replaced, I have had this happen on my 09 this year and HD is aware of the pin fretting problem.

Harley Diagnostic Codes

To access codes

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" (on mine the “t” looks more like a “╘” )with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

1 - Record the codes.

2 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 3 If the code is current it will reappear.

4 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

5 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Here are the codes it is pulling

P0120
P0220
P0223
P1511
P2135

The codes will not clear and the bike will not start. Last time it started was Sunday when we took it off the trailer. It started and ran fine. It sat Sunday night and Monday until after work and now will not start at all. We do have electric and it tries to turn over. It just won't start, idol or anything.

Hello? Anyone have any ideas? Any clue why it won't even start? Anything?

Have Sean pull the ECM connector and clean the pins and the plug with electrical contact cleaner. Then put a small amount of dielectric grease on the pins before he reconnects the ECM. There is a service bulletin on which pins are the problem ones but I don't have it. Dawg might be able to help with that, but i just cleaned all of them and put the dielectric grease on. I haven't had a problem since. Maybe 8 or 10 thousand miles ago.

He's done that. He's cleaned and greased all connections. Before it would fire and idle. Now it's trying to turn over but won't fire up. It's like it got worse.
