I'd do the bolts, but the bag cages are available on HD's site, and they do more than just protect the bags from falling off. They reinforce the rear engine guard, which might save the bags in case of a drop. Nostalgic ones are like 200 bux, and the ones like on the ultra are a bit more. Plus, there's bling factor.

That being said, I'd do the bolts too. Bolts are cheap. Saddlebag guard rails are cheaper than bags.

And yes, when there's a will there's a way. But someone might steal your sled from inside of the vault at Fort Knox, for nothing more than to prove it can be done. It is what it is.

All one can do is slow 'em down. Doesn't matter what it is, if they want it, they'll get it.

My Calvary Fiberglass bags have welded bolts to the frame and nuts on the inside of the bags. Until I read this thread I always thought this was a PITA and when installing my new HD bags I was looking forward to easy no tool bag removal. Now I have rethought that idea and think I will just weld on bolts and use knurled thumb nuts on the inside with lock washers and fender washers. They will need to brake into the bags to steal them. At least they won't be falling off.

Last summer i was riding to work, i had taken the bag cage off the bike because i just didnt like them on there, anyways im on my way to work and hear something and look back and theres my right Saddle Bag sliding down the road, i turned about to get it and a pickup had just stopped, he seen me coming and took off, it had all my heart meds , my gun, my cell phone, my glasses and my lunch, i was sure glad the lid was locked and i heard it hit the ground, the clips end had spread, now i put one nut and bolt in the rear one.

Yup. Swapped mine out for the Brukus kit - never looked back. Slightly more hassle to remove a bag for maintenance, etc. but well worth it for the extra security. Great product.

Also got the matching seat post screw.

+1 on the Brukus kit. I've had mine for 6 months and it works great.

Stainless Allen bolts, 1 inch and U-nuts no worries and no special wrenches to worry about losing either.
Make sure your bags are locked too.
