last week change the oil in my 2011 flhtc. first time i buy h,d. oil in gallon. uselly buy 4 quarts. so end up with to much oil in engine.so take my blaster to remove some.uselly i put one finger at the end so oil is not dripping on pipe.but f...k notice the plastic end ad i missing piece ..broke..on funnel. do not remember if broke before. so i drain the oil in my pan .then put oil back in gallon with funnel with screen no plastic. put oil back in engine. go for spin .oil pressure 32 so noting wrong.. ride few more time 32 again. go to go .go for bigger ride .start hearing lifter noise. stop no more oil pressure .towing to my indy check for pressure noting. check oil pump looking fine. remove oil pan no plastic. check cam plate.. voila..the damm plastic was there melts .in the cavity around the crank and in to the drill passage . cap with 1 press round ball.. yes plastic melts in oil engine. no is no good.everything is back and fine so no more turkey blaster for mr fuji .not a newbie first harley 1965 pan do all my work mrfuji
Good story, thanks for sharing, now we know why funnels used to be made out of metal at one time. I have had cheepy plastic funnels distort/disintegrate on me just from petroleum products alone, let alone getting them hot.
It wont melt unless it gets soaked and remains in the oil for extended period....sucks it happened to you, that blows.
I keep an exact amount on my cabinet inside door of oil amounts for all my vehicles so when I do oil changes I wont have to jack around with it. honda 4qts 20 oz/RK 4 qts 16oz/VStar 3qts 14oz etc. Before you ask, I drain the sump of the 1qt of dirty oil is why I can get that much in there......(Scavenger system).
