Default Trouble with my speedo/blinker return RKC

Hi all, the wife and I took our 2001 RKC on a little ride yesterday, 250 or so miles. During the tail end of our ride my speedometer started dropping out (needle dropping to zero) and intermitently bouncing back up and down. Finnally I lost the speedo entirely and at the end of our ride I noticed that my turn signals were not automatically cancelling themselves. The blinkers were remaining on long after my turns and I'd have to manually cancel them.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for troubleshooting this?

Thanks.

I just did a search for that sensor and found this diagram. I went out to the bike and had a look. Certainly looks easy enough and makes sense.

Thanks very much.

Yes, and that is what controls your signals cancelling and makes your speed act funny when it gets dirty/goes out. You can try to clean it, but you may as well just replace it.

Thanks very much, I knew there had to be a sensor on the output end of the trans, I just didn't know where it was or what it was called. This is really a relief because it's right there, so easy to get to.

I have been having trouble with my speedo all summer but usually only on hot days or after 50-75 miles into a ride. Then on a cool engine and on short rides it would be normal. I'll try cleaning first and it looks like I can pick a new one up for 75 bucks or so, that's awesome.

Thanks again very much. Now If I can learn a little about my new front tire that is sort of cupping (wearing a bit uneven) lol!!

Actually I have plenty to inquire about here. I need a new back tire too and not sure how much of that task to take on myself.

But thanks for the help on the speed sensor.

Dave

Best thing to do is get a HD service manual for your scoot. With the speed sensor, don't confuse it with the neutral indicator as both are on the top of the tranny. One's in front and the other is in the rear. The service manual will also help you take off your rear wheel.

If front tire is cupping try raising air pressure up to the max recommended on the tire, cupping is usually caused by too low pressure.

I had to replace 3 of those in one summer on my old Sporty. Then it was good for another 7 or 8 years...weird.

I think I'm at max on both front and rear tires but I will check them, it's not bad (yet) but I noticed a bit of cupping starting while washing the bike yesterday.

Ok, here's what I found when I pulled the sensor out, lots of little magnetic shavings. (bike has around 31500 miles on it)

I wiped it off...

I stuck it back in there and so far so good!

If it gives trouble at warm temps I'll just replace it.

Thanks again very much!

now how do I remedy my squeaky pipe mounts?

where the mufflers are rubber mounted, god that's an aggrivating squeak.
