Thanks for the replies guys. First thing I'm going to do tomorrow is a thorough inspection of the drive belt. I hope that a rock in it is all it is, but at the same time hope there isn't any damage to the belt. As mentioned, those are pretty darn expensive to replace.
If I can't find anything there, then it's off to the dealership on Tuesday.
I have an ultra classic that I bought new in march and at the 10k service a couple weeks ago they replaced my compenstator....told them at the time that this will get expensive....
Well if there's something jammed or a tear in the belt it revolves around behind the rear of the primary so yeah the noise will be coming from the primary. Im not trying to be negative but why would you figure they checked something just because you paid them for it? That's the reason why so many people do their own services because they are notorious for getting paid and not doing what they should. If the symptoms your describing is correct, I would thoroughly inspect the drive belt and rear pulley. Please report your findings when you know....thanks.
Could you have a pebble or something lodged in the -inside- (teeth side) of the drive belt? Thus the longer "interval" between hearing the noise. Is it possible to inspect the belt by slowly pushing the bike forward in neutral? Go a few feet, inspect, repeat. Mark the belt with a pen or something so you can tell when you've looked at the whole thing.
I had a small rock get imbedded in the drive belt of my FXR at about 30,000 miles. It was in the center, so I pushed it out, leaving a small hole. Rode the bike to 99,700 and traded it -- still with the original belt.
I had something similar twice...first time primary chain tensioner quits with NO warning...second time, it sounded similar, but it turned out to be the starter switch. It was trying to start the bike whenever it felt while I was riding down the road...good luck with your fix
Well folks, mystery solved. Unfortunately, it wasn't a simple pebble in the drive belt, or a warranty eligible tranny issue.
There's what was causing the clacking noise. And this is AFTER I bent it down. It was sticking straight out, and kind of forward.
And the inside edge of the belt is a little chewed up, but not real bad. And this tire only had about 1,000 miles on it. Guess we'll find out tomorrow how good that H-D tire/wheel warranty is. But I bought the tire online, and had an indy install it. I may be screwed.
