Early throttle by wire bikes had to be shut down with the ignition switch instead of engine cut off or taken in for a download to resolve the high rev issue but now I think using the engine cut off (kill switch) is ok.
Cycling the ignition switch 5 times used to baseline all the (learned) settings.
Thumb, key, valve is still being taught with fuel valve not needed on newer bikes by RidersEdge.
The owners manual is the written rule to go by in my opinion.

If you use the ign switch to kill the motor you get better gas mileage...but if you do "run, stop, run, stop, ign, off, ign, off, acc, ign, acc, off, left rurn signal, right turn signal, left+right turn signals together, then put the bike in second gear, and honk the horn twice" it unlocks the "unlimited gas" cheat code.

When I was 5 or 6 years old most of the bikes around my town were kickstarted bikes. Not many used the kill switches, they were always in the run position.

I used to sneak around parked bikes and turn the switch to off and then wait around out of sight until the owner came back and tried to start his bike. He would usually kick it about 100 times trying to figure out why it wouldn't start.

Then I'd walk up and offer to help him, look things over and point out to him that his kill switch was off. He'd be so happy his bike started he wouldn't even think it was probably me shut it off.

I am lucky I never got the slap upside the head I deserved, but it was fun.j

Thanks for looking that up. That should put this issue to rest.

This thread got out of control quickly. Unless you are aware of how microcontrollers and computers really work, you wouldn't know of the nuances that were being discussed at the beginning.

It is very easy to forget to turn off the ignition with the newer keyless systems. Being a senior doesn't help either.

I had someone do that to me many years ago..... he thought it was a lot more funny than I did...!

After kick #30 or so, he walked over with a big smile on his face, flipped on the kill switch, and said, "see if that helps..!"

I would have chased him down but my leg was spent...!

I always use the kill switch since owning fuel injected bikes... I don't know why, but just do. I've never forgot to turn off the ignition, but it took about a month on the first fuel injected bike to stop reaching to turn on/off the fuel..!

100,000 miles using the kill switch at every shut down with zero issues.

hocus pocus, you gained 10ft lbs and 10hp from not using your kill switch!

I doubt it... I use the kill switch and have for years.

I just red this whole thread, I don't know why, but I'm exhausted.

Do you think I'm going to trust myself to turn off the ignition every time after I flip the kill switch?
