Grew up shooting artillery before the digital age, riding, and a few (too many??) Dead shows. Bad habits from then leave me with tinnitus (those electronic buzzing crickets) and hearing aids now. Had I only listened to those with experience I probably wouldn't be telling the kids and wife to stop mumbling Wear them whenever you ride, mow, etc. Wish I had. Now I do even for a short run to the store.
Always, except around town. Tennitus is always present. Too much loud music, gunfire, construction noise and riding without plugs before I knew better. Trying to keep it from getting worse. These are what I use. Cuts the wind noise, and I can hear the radio better with them than without them. http://www.earplugstore.com/wimoearpl.html
i have quit jobs because they required earplugs.. only time i wear them is when i'm shooting. and a few times at work when i was sick of listening to all the BS..
There are a lot of misguided comments in here. Protect your hearing FFS! We wear them on trips in the car, as well as concerts and planes, even trains.
As for ear plugs, there are many brands and styles out there, from custom made with or without built-in speakers, to the cheap and plentiful disposable industrial type. Having used plugs for decades, I found I could easily get a week of commuting using the disposable variety.
I also found they can vary a lot in fit and comfort. I have one ear canal larger than the other, so am limited on what plugs I can wear, to get a good fit in my bigger ear. No I have never tried custom ones!
Try it for a few miles. I drive a new car with all the latest bells and whistles to make it 'quiet' and aerodynamic. Take them out after a few miles and notice the difference.

Congrats on the bells and whistles. I too am able to afford and drive new cars. Fortunately, I am able to afford models that don't require the use of ear plugs.
