Could wrap it back up and take it back informing the parts guy he ordered the wrong kit, because the right kit clearly would work for my bike...see what they tell/ offer you as a solution.
great write up, I want to do the same thing by cutting down the lower bracket! I just cant find any crash bars on ebay for a 2012 sg, all the ones i find are good up to 2008 will those still work?
Great write up,

If the 2 pieces were just butted together a weld would be critical, but due to the fact you get 1/2" slip fit, one inside the other, there will be plenty of strength.
For a perfect look, if the whole assembly can be removed from the bike, pull them and get them powder coated or plated to finish desired.
I know this is 2 year old thread, but thinking of trying something like this as well for my 2013 SG. Thing is, I don't have access to a welder, so I was thinking of inserting a smaller pipe sleeve (the half inch overlap seems too short) into both guard and lower bars, then using bolts through the bars and sleeve. Sorta using the sleeve to join the parts. Just curious if anyone thinks that would be a good idea. I mean, on bikes with guards, there's a bolted joint. Can't imagine two would be much weaker.
