Default Saddlebag Guards Install ?

I decided to put on a set of the rear saddlebag guards in black. Ordered from the dealer, waited 5 days, picked up and went to install last night only to realize that I need new support brackets for under the bags. ...disappointed that the parts guy at the dealer didn't let me know that I actually needed another $200-$250 in parts to make this work.

Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible to simply cut the existing supports under the bags so that they fit into the new bag-guards. This seems easy enough, would save me a bunch of $, and since I'd be discarding the original supports (according to the instructions) nothing seems lost.

Anyone done this? Have thoughts? Thanks!

Mine didn't require any additional parts. Just reuse the old ones. If your bike is already setup for dual exhaust you don't have to buy anything else. It's a rubber grommet and a flat steel plate that slides through that grommet. That's all.

The support bar under the bag should have been included with the kit. If it wasn't you need to go back to your salesman.

Hmm. I guess I'm even more confused now. The instructions that came with my kit (49283-90) clearly state that I need a separate purchase of 76557-09 (antenna bracket), 49194-09 and 90781-09 (under-bag supports I assume), and 7531 (nut) X2.

So, what I'm asking is rather than buying all those additional pieces, can I just cut (and maybe weld) my existing support bars under the bags. They are over $100ea to buy, which seems a little crazy.

Acc catalog states: FLHX, FLTR,FLTRU, etc (models that do not come stock with the guards) require separate purchase of SB supports, and 2 nuts.

If the bike already has chrome guards, don't need the supports. The under bag supports are different when there are no guards present. If you cut the existing before the bend, don't think it will reach the new guard.

I was gonna get the black ones too until I read the description. I just got the kit with the chrome hoops and had them powder coated. I'd just take the black ones back and get the kit and have the hoops coated if you want black ones.

So, the chrome kit comes with all the necessary pieces for only $40 more than the black ones? That doesn't seem to make sense to me.

The kits comes with everything, side hoops, lower bracket, antenna braket and some mounting hardware...part number 49282-09B is what you need. Doesn't make sense but that's the facts. I had the hoops coated gloss black so no big deal. I just put them on yesterday

from what the parts guy told me (back when i did mine in 2011) was that the changed the way the rear bars are in 2010. so yes you need to do what i did & go back & get the rest of the parts you need. it is a separate kit that unfortunately you will need to get. i was in the same boat as you & why wouldnt the parts guy tell me that when i ordered it in the first place.

as far as cutting the old one i cant help you there but like you said your just going to throw it away so why not try to cut it.
i sold my old bars for $100 on here though so that offset the cost of the other kit a little for me.

best of luck to you

CHILLLS; so are you saying that the additional parts are required for anything newer than 2010 for the black and chrome kits or will the chrome kit that includes all the parts for $40 more, like craigffb is recommending still work on my 2012 FLHX?

thanks,
