I just viewed a video from You Tube under 2012 Harley heat management: also known as “parade mode”. Very interesting, first stage front cylinder shuts down around 325*, stage 2 at 375* alternating between front & rear cylinders, stage 3 shuts engine down. There can be a 40* increase after shutdown so allow an hour or two before restarting, in the video background you can hear someone saying to shut it down for three beers…. Ha ha ha! Another interesting comment was if the header pipe doesn’t have a catalytic converter either (replaced or removed) heat management system doesn’t activate nearly as much, (makes sense).
I’m going to the dealer and pick up a factory header pipe and have catalytic converter cut out. They have new ones on the shelf removed from recent exhaust upgrades (should be inexpensive). This will not only reduce head temperatures, will also dramatically reduce massive heat that’s cooking my right leg, a win, win situation.
Addressing XiED's might not be such a bad thing, little more fuel might just be the answer. EPA leaned the crap out of our bikes reducing emissions (like motorcycles need leaner emissions) ha! Just think of that next time you pull up to a 18 wheeler bellowing smoke out the exhaust, don’t get me started…
Yep! And they keep selling them with obsolete/cheap electronics...
Yep, they have a great scam goin'. But I guess from their point of view, if people just keep buying them as fast as they can crank 'em out and then buy more H-D parts to make them run right, why fix anything?
I'm sure if Harley could ditch EPA they would but their hands are tied and it's up to us to make it right unless you don't care and have the money to buy a new scoot every other year.

B Bop
Have ya noticed how well new cars run and how much power they make? They have tougher EPA standards than motorcycles! Yet make more power per cc and fuel mileage per pound than Harley can/does. I have a hard time blaming the EPA for Harley not using the same excellent available technology to make their engines run right. Just more kool aid???

I'm not an expert, but I don't think there are any EPA compliant air cooled cars. The new wet HD's make better power...just sayin!
I removed the stock ecm and replaced with Thunder Max Auto Tuner & wide band o2 sensors S&S headers Rinehart mufflers. Stop the deceleration popping it only pings when in to low rpm acceleration when in to high a gear for the load at hand. It's not a stock engine so good luck with your stock Emissions.
One thing's for sure. Once the EPA figures out how to do emissions tests on motorcycles, about 90% of Harley owners are gonna be seriously fcuked!!
I'm in no way saying that I support or in any way agree with the BS emissions laws, but I'm certain that it's totally illegal to make ANY changes to any US registered vehicle's emission system.
It's amazing to me that the EPA hasn't found a way to crack down on this by now. It's only a matter of time till they do, though, with all these posts about how to modify these bikes. All it'll take is one self-serving politician deciding to go on a crusade and it's all over!
When I had slight pinging (long uphills on a hot day) I hatched a scheme to attempt to fix it on the cheap.
I ordered a used V-ied off this forum classifieds. Intended to sell them for the same price if it did not work.
For me…it worked. 2012 103.
Noticed the engine running cooler, but exhaust still hot. Ordered a e-bay cat less header in the same manner. For me…this worked too. Exhaust much cooler. G/F much happier, and no more red right ankle.
Next, ordered a used, but like new, Fuel Moto air filter. Seemed to make just a little difference, but will keep this too.
Now my Street Glide runs like the wind. Lots cooler, never goes into parade mode, pulls much stronger when riding two up. Better throttle response and less need to slip the clutch when taking off, better (just a little) fuel economy, better exhaust tone, and did all for less than the cost of a fancy tune or tuner.
Hope you experience as much improvement, for so little cash, as I have.
Jpooch00 - It’s not about clean air, it’s about mo money! That’s why I previously referenced to over polluting 18 wheelers. There just not enough bikes for EPA to make a stand, policing bikes to be efficient on emissions will not make any money and lacks common sense. They should go after the over polluting vehicles in the masses before making a stand on a few measly motorcycles that already produce the lowest emissions than any other combustion engine transportation on earth.
But then when did the government ever make any sense.....
oh, Uncle Paul what is a V-ied?

They have already had testing in Maricopa County in Arizona. They just repealed it. I believe you are right, it is all about money and as others have pointed out the fines collected probably came no where near the amount of money spent. And seeing as they caught almost no one I'm betting they concluded that the clean air generated by the corrections were almost nil. But its just a guess.
