2012 HD/RK - 103 engine w/oil cooler 3,500 miles (100% stock), pinging under acceleration, popping sound from exhaust when under deceleration when hot, ambient temp around 92 degrees. Im using highest octane fuel available, what is the correct non-Band-Aid repair; its still under factory warranty? B Bop

Maybe I should rephrase the question; does anyone know what the problem is and the long term solution? The reason Im asking my scoot is at the dealership in winter storage and need to address my problem to the Techs. I would like to be on top of all the excuses or angles they might through at me. Im a old school car guy and new to the bike world, and would appreciate any professional insight on this topic that may help.

B Bop Thx!
I've been seeing that there's some kind of ECM re-flash or ECM replacement that the dealers can do that might cure the problem. If I were you, I would suggest that they look into that option.
I've never heard my bike ping - but on the flipside, with a full helmet and earplugs, I'm not sure if I could hear it if it was pinging .... how loud is it?
My dealer had a new ecm sent out to them. When it arrived they called me and I brought the bike in and they switched them out in about 45 minutes. No more pinging.
GREAT news there,,,, they must of reprogrammed the ecm and taken some timing out.
Weird note: I have seen top jug gasket cause this on one bike and it was a booger to track down. It acted like another spark when hot causing the pre ignition, a real bastard to track down. paul
How far off must the timing be to ping with the recommended grade fuel? With the ION sensing system in place doesn't the ecm retard the timing quite a bit before it is no longer retarding, like 10 degrees? Sounds like there is something else amiss, if the bike is stock that is and still pinging.

From what I've seen/heard, all of the factory-stock bikes of that vintage have pinging issues.

That's my point, what is wrong with the ION sensing? If I remember correctly it will take out up to around 10 degrees of timing. Assuming premium fuel, stock HD plugs are used along with stock wires, and the system IS enabled , the system should work. Maybe it is in the ecm and the software is wrong and thats what they are doing.

On my 13 the stock tune will pull as much as 6 degrees of timing when the ecm detects a pinging event.
With my Power Vision I can change that if I want.
