Default 80ci advice needed

Hi all, need to know what models harleys are available with 80ci engine with mid pegs, (i prefer mids with highway pegs as its most suitable for my riding style) . I like the fat boy/fat bob style bikes and i dont need saddlebags, i will fit a sissy bar for strapping luggage bags when ever if see the need. I also want a model thats not low and have good suspension travel as the roads i ride down here in the carribbean tend to be rough and i will use it for 2 up riding. I once was interested in a new fatbob but read where the rear cylinder gets hot in traffic so i forgot about that as if it get hot in the USA its going to roast down here where its hot all year round. I bought a new iron 883 earlier this year and love the lil bike, i fitted 12" mini apes and took some padding from the rise to the rear of the solo seat and its perfect with the exception of limited suspension travel. I am 6'1'' and weigh near 240lbs and i ride the sportster long distances with no comfort issues, i fitted highway pegs as i heard how cramped they are for people my size but up until now i have not found it necessary to use them even after a 220 mile run. The other harley i have is a 61 duoglide that i have as a resto project.

Sorry bud but I can't help ya. There are lots of knowledgable guys here that may be able to chime in. Why are you looking for a 80 ci? As for the rear cylinder heat, it's honestly not THAT hot. Many people on here complain about everything in the world....sometimes I think just to complain. Or maybe they're just that much of a wuss. I live in Las Vegas and it gets very hot in the summer but it doesn't seem like my 103" gets unbearably hot. At least down there you have some humidity that will give a cooler breeze as you're riding. I would consider something newer with a bigger engine...maybe a 88 ci if you're wanting something bigger and more powerful than your 883.

The 80" was introduced on the Shovelhead in the late 70's ( previously 74", like your Panhead)

then the 80" Evo motor was introduced in 1984.5 and used on Touring & Dyna series bikes until 1999 ( and on Softail bikes to 2000).

The 88" Twin Cam superceded the Evo and is still used, with changes in displacement to 95", 96", 103" and 110".
There are 2 versions the "A" motor which is used on touring and Dyna is monted on rubber buching to the bike- reducing vibrations. The "B" motor is used in the Softail models and uses rotating balancing shafts to reduce vibes, this motor is solid mounted to the frame

Most touring series bikes have mid controls with floorboards instead of pegs. the pillion may also have floor boards equipped.

Most touring models use 13" shocks with 3.75" travel, these are adjustable with air pressure to compensate for rider, passenger and luggage weight.

the touring series look horrible with out saddlebags mounted.

the Dyna series may be more what you have in mind. Most share the same front end as your Sporty.

or the Softail- although I think the ride horrible and you would have to pay me to ride one.

You should look at photos on the web to see what appeals to you.

Then of course look at what is available in your area.

Does JA still have a 100% import duty on vehicles?

Mike

@mkguitar, thanks for the input and duties have gone down somewhat here depending on the size vehicle, motorcycles over 700cc are restricted and need an import liscence for importation. there is no harley dealer here any more, last one packed up in the late seventies so the harleys that are here are mostly all personal imports as back in the sixties and seventies only a handfull of the 1200 were imported, the duo glide i have is one such bike.
@bamaboy cheif concern with wanting the 1340cc bike was weight so i figured that the 1340cc bikes would weigh somewhat less than the newer larger displacement bikes. i am not keen on overweight motorcycles as manuvering can become an issue. the iron 883 is already weighty and i can tolerate that so dont want to go too much over that. i really love how the new fatbob looks but i realy prefer a bike with more suspension travel so i guess a road glide(dyna series) might be the answer. If i can get over the weight factor there is an 06 annniversary glide(looks like the 1971 bike) that i would go for now that the overheating rear cylinder has been explained. I would not be using the larger bike round town anyways as i have a sportster that does that just fine.

One option, if you are looking towards a new bike, would be the Dyna Switchback. Has the bigger motor, detach windshield and detach hardbags. Take those off and it looks like a nice Dyna. Add those and you have a decent touring bike w/o the weight and all the niceties. More suspension travel and looks good. I'd have to look again but I think it has floorboards. Sorry I wasn't more help before but I wasn't too sure of all the info so I didn't want to swear you wrong

Also a Road Glide is not a Dyna. It's a Touring model. Unless you're talking about some old bike from way back then the Road Glide has a large fairing up front and is waaaay more weight than the 883. I'm not sure how big a boy you are but if a 883 is hard for you to throw around then I don't know what to tell you because that thing feels like a pocket bike to me and can throw it around like a 125cc dirt bike

@bamaboyjc, i should have elaborated on the weight issue a bit more. Its actually vehicle weight standing still and that comes into play when manuvering the bike up a slight grade or in a tight parking area etc. or as the other day i was making a slow tight turn and i had to brake as i was running out of turning space, well the bike already in a lean angle started to go down, lol, had to hold front brake, put foot down quickly and muscle it upright, if it was any heavier i would have had to let her go down then pick it up back. The sportster is more flickable riding than maybe all the other bikes i own, i just find the Harleys riding position more to my suit than the sports tourers i have such as Kawasaki ZRX which is a great bike but different from Harley in many many ways, i feel more relaxed on the Harley, so its like getting a larger Harley, not so much for speed but to be able to take my wife along if needs be and still have a bike that easy to go into corners etc. As rare as Harleys are here, i know a guy who recently got a 2011 road glide (its a trike) and that bike is wide, nice looking unit but not sure i love the engine dancing arund in the frame at idle, looks like it was going to jump out at some point LOL. I defenitely wont be buying another new Harley at this time even though i would prefer that but the funds wont allow. my plan is for the sporty round town and the larger bike for two up and outa town tours. The only real difficulty i have here is finding a comy larger harley that has mids, even if it has floorboards up front, i like the option of cornering with mids and also being able to stand on them in rough road coditions which floor board dont allow.
