I have done both.

I spent a ton of money on my 2009 and then decided I needed to upgrade the motor.
I did the SE 103 Stage IV kit. At 18,000 miles the motor gave out so I traded it for a CVO
and I now know I should have bought the CVO from the very start.

All the CVO will need is a header from Fullsac.
There are two ways to do it
1) send them your stock pipe and they will redo it http://www.fullsac.com/sportpipe.html $279
2) buy their header http://www.fullsac.com/x-pipe.html $479

There are all kinds of things on that CVO bike, take a closer look.

You plan on dying soon?

If your budget allows, the CVO's are King without a doubt. Just plan on a few extra k for engine mods to bump the power. After riding my 107" I wouldn't be happy with the power of the 110 stock but that's me.

Good luck with your decision.

Do the work to your existing bike. Fuel Moto has some great kits, they have a kit that brings your engine to a 107 and comes with cams also. With a good pipe and tune and high flow A/C that would make your bike be as quick or quicker then the CVO I'd think.

I personally don't think the CVO models are that great of a value, are they sweet bikes? Hell yeah they are, and they sell out every year so Harley is doing something right, but the truth we all try to ignore is that a $26,000 as far as performance can be compared to a Suzuki M109R that cost $12,000. Don't get me wrong I love Harleys but if you wanna go fast you gotta build it yourself in most cases. .. If you were willing to spend the money you could always get a crate motor and make your 09 run real well, SE 120R or S&S 124 and then sell your stock engine and you'd be doing great.. All that being said I'd advise looking at the Fuel Moto 107 kit, If I had a 96 or 103 TC I'd be getting the FM kit for sure..
Hope this helps, good luck with whatever you decide!

So if even with the CVO you have to do engine work then what's the point in having a CVO when you're gonna do the same engine mods you'd do to a base bike. Just seems like it doesn't make sense to me.

this is what I would do and have done in the past several times; a stock 110 is good but a built 107 will smoke it

Had an 08 ultra 105 Annv. Up to. 11 cvo, miss the 08 but hard to complain about the SE6. Don't know that it would win a race, but hell I haven't raced in 20 years. Go cvo if the money works.
