I have a new 2012 E glide Classic. I am in Germany with the Army, so increased sound isn't really a great option. I am looking at increased power and less heat off the engine. And for the option for different header pipes next year in the states, where decibels aren't as big a problem. I am looking at the V&H Monster Ovals, Power Vision tuner, and Fuel Moto intake. Any ideas if this combo will give me some more power, without getting too loud, but give me some room to expand next year?
The Germans (and MPs for us) look at 95 decibels as the limit. They are pretty strict, so that is the "too loud". I have problems with my other bike with that. It sounds like waiting until I can change out the entire system may be the best idea next year.
maybe for now gut the cat and leave the rest till ya get home , should help with the heat , alottle better power and keep the db down , then when ya get home ya can do it all with out wasting to much money , and thanks for being over there so we can play over here
Sure, you should see a little more fire in the wire with that set-up. And with the richer fuel mixture that the PV will provide, that extra fuel may also provide you with the benefit of a slightly cooler running engine.
But as others have said, it's mostly the cat (coupled with your stock lean running engine) that is making all the heat on the right side. If you have some buds that work in a machine shop, they could probably cut that cat out for you and weld it shut. Several posts here on that topic with pictures. But it will give you a bit more sound level.
I don't however think that you will exceed 95 decibles if they perform measurements at at 1000 or 2000 rpm with the setup you are considering....even with the cat out. Now once you get on it, yes, it will get louder. But they are going to check you at idle or at 2000 rpms I would guess.
Anyway, might be worth it to ask some of the MPs what their sound measurement process entails. My fuel moto 2-1-2 header, with the stage one air cleaner and Rev performance auto tuning coupled with the Jackpot Pro touring muffs are at 89 DB measured at 2000 rpm. So you should be fine, just be aware and keep it moderate in the neighborhoods. You can goose it once you get out of town where nobody complains.
Thanks for your service in the United States Army!!
While you are in Germany you could take the EC approved version of the Monster Ovals. When you will be back in the US you can take the db eater out. A good place to get questions about the power vision and other performance tuning answered is House of Thunder in Lübeck.
