Just read article circulated by J@P Cycles regarding spring cam tensioners and hydraulic cam tensioners and the poor design by Harley and the inevitable failure. They suggest gear driven cams.Just looking for secondary opinions on this topic. The article implies that hyd cam tensioners as I have in my 2010 FLHTK merlot and cherry sunglo,s/e hi flo a/c , s/e super tuner,v/h power duels, monster ovals and s/e compensator fail at the 50000 mile mark. What is the cost of this conversion . Thanks

Your tensioners are just fine. Here's a look at mine with 90k on them and I''m not the only one with similar results plus its likely your crank run out would prevent you from doing gears without $$$ in crank work.
Your hydraulic cam tensioner is very good. You put in gear drive for around $1000 plus you better make sure your crank has .004 play or less. Then thats several hundred more ! You really don't need to worry about it. IMO
If adding gear drive cams check the run out on your crank and ensure it is under .003. Supposedly you get more power with a gear drive cam than the hydraulic tensioners. I have the hydraulic upgrade on both of my bikes as t hey are both 2002. No issues yet. One has 75K and the other has 40K.

You talking about the "Biker Buzz" newsletter? If so, their talking about the older spring type tensioners. The newer piston type will last a long time.

Well they threw the new hyd one's under the buss also and promoted the S&S gear drives along with Belray oil.
