I'm looking to upgrade my '06 Road King, not sure what I should do first -- upgrade to a 6-speed tranny with a Baker DD6 or increase the horsepower with a perfomance upgrade to a 96? Looking for input. I eventually plan on doing both, but was leaning toward upgrading to the 6-speed tranny first. As always, just looking to the knowledgeable readers of the forum for their thoughts.
Dish,
Being a new Harley owner and otherwise even-minded giver of input, there are lots of bikes out there with 5 cogs that do just fine with the right powerband... V-Max comes to mind,... and I'd imagine you'll appreciate the engine kit more than the trans upgrade. What's the goal of the 6th gear? Less turns at speed? Won't your engine run lower rpm's when it's putting out 20% more power?
Since I made the same tradeoffs when buying my '05 vs. an '07 a few weeks back, I'd say put the money in the motor, and keep cruising in 5th, like everyone has for so long. Even for resale, not as many people (in my humble opinion) will appreciate somewhat less shakes or better fuel economy over a bike that pulls your arms out of your sockets!
Nice avatar, btw... I'm running the same window decal.
Thanks liquid, appreciate the input. Since I hit the road for distance quite often, thought the extra gear might make the ride smoother. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want the power too, just deciding what to do first is all.
You won't turn fewer revs with more power, you'll just have more power on tap at any given rpm.
That said, if you do a lot of distance, start with the 6 speed and, like billk said, toss a gear drive cam in at the same time. More power/torque and lower cruise revs. Best of both worlds at one time.

Doh!
Yeah, guess you're right, if you think of driving your car around in 1st both before and after hopping up the engine... you'd have to change the ratio somewhere to get lower RPM's. My bad.
I'd still take the power upgrade first[sm=badbadbad.gif]
Thanks for everyone's input. After talking to those on the Forum as well as my other tech types, I think I'll go with the EFI Stage 2 Big Bore Upgrade first, bringing up the horsepower and torque, then follow up later with a 6-speed Baker DD6. As always, I can count on the HDForum junkies to help a fellow rider out.
