It should stay on going down the road in 6th Gear. If it doesn't take it to the dealer

Never figured out why I needed a light to tell me I was in 6th gear as apposed to 5th, or 4th, or 3rd, or 2nd, or 1st?

My 2010 Ultra 6th gear light will go out while riding occasionally. When the light goes out, the cruise control will not work. If I get to a stop light and run up through the gears again it will usually come back on. Not sure why it is intermittent. I do have the PC-V on the bike, not sure if they may be causing the problem.

If you change parameters while riding that cause this sample (rpm vs speed) to fall out of the range the ECM accepts as 6th gear operation, then you can expect the light to fluctuate. The 6th gear indicator light is not a mechanical indicator. From 2011 up, the Delphi ECMs incorporate 24 bit processors, while the previous model bikes had Delphi 16 bit processors. The newer bikes can calculate these variance conditions more rapidly and, as a result, cause more apparent fluctuations in the 6th gear indicator under certain conditions.

The 6 th gear light should be on the entire time you are in that gear. I have never seen mine as much as blink until I pull in the clutch.

On a related note: often times, when I'm in 4th gear (maybe), and I pull in the clutch and roll off the throttle, I'll see the 6th gear light come on for a few seconds. I think this is in keeping with the idea that the ECU turns on the light when there is a certain ratio between engine speed and bike speed. It used to worry me, but I'm fine with it now.

And more on topic: the light is on 100% of the time I'm in 6th gear (I'm never in 6th with the clutch in and the engine at idle, btw).

Go into your PCV software program. On the menu do the following:
Select Power Commander Tools: Configure: Harley ECM Data.
Make sure Diagnostic Port Enabled box is not checked. If it is, uncheck it.
Click OK to accept the changes.

That will fix your problem.

When I got my Triglide this past summer, I had trouble with the clutch slipping. When it was slipping at its worst, the 6th gear indicator light would not come on. I don't know if that is your problem, but once I got my clutch straightened out, I didn't have a problem with my indicator light anymore.
