Yeah probably. Going to look at this bike later this week and probably get it if nothing is wrong with it. Wife and I have reviewed our budget and have been needing to get a touring model for a long time now as we consistently do 400-500 mile days and have mutliple trips already planned next year.
I do want the Road King, and because of MY riding preferences, I want apes (18" or so based on other Road King's I have sat on before). So this bike has a lot I want. I will try to get the windshield and passenger backrest thrown in as part of the deal, but what else should I be thinking of/aware of when getting into a Road King? Thanks in advance for any opinions/feedback.
If you plan on 400 per day trips two up, you are going to need a different seat. I don't see Mama liking the one that's on there. RoadKings are great bikes (Had one for 10 years), but I prefer the FLHR just for the hard, lockable bags.
For serious touring I would also prefer a tubeless wheel. If you are in the middle of nowhere and have a flat you can usually plug and make it to a shop. With a wire rim you wait for the tow truck.
In addition to the passanger backrest, you are going to need a luggage rack unless you can really pack light. It is almost impossible to get everything you need into the saddlebags, especially when you consider rainsuits for two take up most of one bag, and jackets and chaps for two take up the other. You might even want to look into the quick detach leather tour pac for serious touring.
Give Mama the Dyna, and you will not have to worry too much about room.
LOL - Thanks Bill - Yeah luggage rack is on the list. I had not thought of the wheels before, and never really have riding the Dyna I guess. Would I need mag wheels for that then? All I have ever had is spokes.
I agree on the locking bags vs the leather, but I must admit how much more I visually like the Classic vs the Standard Road Kings. As I am already used to the leather on the Dyna, I will probably choose to deal with it.
Good call on the seat, I had not noticed that. I will have to add that and the luggage rack to the budget list, or maybe the dealership might be willing to swap seats with another used Road King there. Never hurts to ask!
Wife does not want to ride (and as clumsy as she is that makes me happy) and prefers to ride passenger. At 120lbs it's not too bad of a deal to have her legs around me all day! I would love to keep the Bob and strip it back down to a solo bike, but I really can't afford a two bike addiction (and storage) and suspect I would rarely ride the Bob anyway.
Wheels, lots of guys change out wheels, so it will be easy and cheap to go to FLHR wheels, Street Glide wheels or Ultra or Classic wheels. All will work provided you use the correct year. And there are different styles for different years, so you will have a lot of choices and still not break the bank. Plus, you will be able to sell or possibly trade the wires. I had wires on my 2005 Classic when the flat issue came up on a trip. When I got home I changed them out for StreetGlide wheels, then sold the wires and broke even.
You are probably right about riding the Dyna after the RoadKing. You just won't use it much if at all. RoadKings are just that good.
What Denver dealer is it sitting in front of? Looks like the one where we had tires replaced on a friend's over Labor day weekend this last year.

2009 was the re-design for Touring bikes. In 2011, the RKC came with the 103" motor. If you can find one of those for not much more money, might be worth it.

Thanks! Not sure that I really care about the 103 that much, but I will certainly use that as a negotiation tactic when I go in to buy it! "Hey wait a minute! Only 96? Maybe I should just look at a Victory then..."
I would try and find an 11 with the 103 also, it's what I ride. I think the 96 is a dog, and yes, I owned one. The 103 seems much stronger to me especially 2 up.
Thanks guys and I will look for one this week. I am just more willing to accept a 96 for a few k less than a 103. I love my 96 Dyna and really don't see a need to go bigger, even though RK weighs a bit more. I just planned on finishing a good stage 1 on it. I will look and compare the costs.
What has me most sold on THIS bike is the bars, which I would have to have the moment I get a RK because I can't stand the standard bars.
