On that HERO 3 you better get the case that allows the USB cable to be pluged in 30 Mins Tops for record time on a battery. Had on for a trip to the Dragon Tail With the Black Hero3 mounted to crash bar with the GoPro "rollbar" mount" what little I recorded did good but 5 mins on Moonshiners run and it died befor I finished 1 pass on the tail!!!
I returned it to Best Buy they took it back (within 30 day mark) but manager said 3 of 5 returned are due to poor battery life.
Had a class 10 64Gb card ..... said up to 9 hours with that card they forget to mention it has to be pluged in for more than 30 mins
Any Ideas on a cam with more battery life?
I've been researching these since this thread started. I hear the GoPro 2 has a battery life of about 2 hours. But I don't own and have never used either so I can't swear by that.
Low battery life and still frame pictures in mid to low light are the biggest complaints about the Hero 3.
Took me some time to find out the best way to mount the camera. Started mounting it to my handlebars using a RAM mount but the bike's vibrations are to heavy to get a good result. Therefor I decided to use my body as a platform to mount the camera.
Parts used:
- piece of 160 ID 4 mm PVC pipe
- L-bracket from the hardware store
- bolts & nuts
- 2 straps
The PVC has been shaped to follow the contours of my leg. Slots were drilled for the straps and the upper bolt (to enable up/down camera movement)
Went all the way through this thread, watching a couple videos, mostly disappointing, oh joy, out for a ride with pops kinda stuff. If I am gonna sit through a video of someone riding their bike I would like to see sparks from floorboards scraping.
Then come to your post. Gotta appreciate someone that takes things to another level and thinks outside the box. But no, did not watch your vids as by the time I got to your post I was videod out. Just appreciated your ingenuity.
ShadowHog - our original "test" footage was lost when our old digital camera crapped out. We'll take more but it's gonna have to wait - it's 10 degrees with a foot of snow here, not riding weather! Oh, hmm, I might have some on my personal flip videocam... gonna have to check on that when I'm home... Anyway, I can tell you that our new anti-vibration feature REALLY minimizes the wiggles.
I us the RAM mount set up that Dr. Tiki uses and have the piggy back battery that GoPro sells. Used this for the Coronado Trail in late October. Shot 4 hrs. of raw video and had lots of battery left. Did the same set up for Williams to Oatman this summer with similar results. Use a helmet mount on the wife's helmet from time to,time with good results. I also download to,iMovie and it works very well.
I also have one mounted on a spare helmet "helmet cam". It gives great frame shot, including hands on handle bars, like what I see when looking forward. It also gives me ability to do some left and right slow panning while riding panoramic scapes.
I am using the Go Pro, extended battery, and a Class 10 32GB USB and the only thing I don't like is the battery life however I never considered using the USB port from my bike which I will now rig up.

I would say I get at least an hour....... I do plan on picking up some more batteries and they can be found for under $25 for a pair.
The battery life is somewhat short however I have been recording with the settings turned all the way up (ProTune included) and with WiFi on. Today I did more pictures then video and it was fine.

I believe I posted earlier that if you get the skeleton case you can then use the USB cord to power the camera. No worries on battery life.
You can see it in this picture. I have it mounted on a rented EG. Ran it that way for 8 days out west with no probs.
