42-43 mixed all day... Unless I'm beating on it, then I get 39. I have never gotten lower than 39, even two up and running like a bat out of hell on the highway for hours at a time.
Probably been beat to death over the years. New used bike to me. Has a Big Sucker, and some slip ons. Bike seems to have quite of bit of power, and this is coming from a Buell Rider. Doesn't show any signs of running lean. Engine seems to run cool, and on deceleration there is no backfiring, just a little bit of gurgling.
The bike runs good, the only drawback is 37mpg, and that is riding it like an old man.
Is this normal? I would have expected about 42-43..
Oh, the bike came from an auction, so I have no idea what may or may not have been done to it.
You could have your bike's VIN run at a local HD dealer and he might be able to see if any engine mods have been done. As for as fuel milage 37 mpg sounds about normal. Just ride and enjoy.
Could this be the reason for the lower than expected mpg?
Definitely...I also didnt hear any mention of a tuner of some sort. Definitely needed for the bigger air cleaner. I normally try to keep my rpms in a certain range when I ride and not focus so much on speed. I usually try to keep the rpm at about 2700-3000. In sixth gear with the 103 and the intake, head pipe and exhaust, thats usually in the mid 60s to 70+ mph speed at those rpms. I usually average about mid 40s gas mileage when doing about 90% highway, and high 30s to low 40s when mixed between city and highway. I live in the suburbs of atlanta so I get a healthy mix of both highway and city but mostly highway. I would check for a tuner and see about getting a better tune? It may be running a little rich (more fuel than air) which wouldnt be a bad thing because it would keep engine temps down but a sacrifice could be made in fuel economy. I personally wouldnt worry too much. Just start using that sixth gear more often!!
