Replaced my totaled FXD with 2013 FLH Classic.
Was going to put K&N air filter on but told by dealer I would need to retune the engine. Anyone know if this is true? Harley makes EFI engines for anywhere in the country. Denver to Miami with considerable air difference between the two. Wouldn't the on board controller automatically adjust?
Why would a retune be necessary on a computer controlled engine?
Anyone have any thoughts to share?
This is a new one for mr!
The dealer is lying to you. You can do a complete stage 1 without having to retune, that means AC and exhaust sytem. The ECM will adjust.
I'm not trying to sell you a tuner, but I can tell you that any change to intake and/or exhaust affects your AFR, the ECM has a very narrow range of adjustment, and without O2 feedback its anyone's guess whether or not you need a tune after the change. Sorry I can't help to reinforce the popular belief, but I've been tuning by O2 analysis for several years so thats where my "opinion" comes from. It may very well be "ok" without a tune, but each bike and configuration is a little different so you won't know for sure without validation by sniffer.
EFI allows for precise fuel control allowing for more hp, better mileage and a better running motor with lower emissions. However the factory tunes it pretty conservatively.
All cars are FI since '91 iirc. And even performance models benefit from dyno tuning.
It's a good idea for the bike if you make some modifications. Fuelmoto, Thundermax, etc.
harley tolerances are all but tight including electronics, and the range of adjustment is small,so bad that i would be willing to bet if ya put 2 stock bikes on a sniffer u would get 2 COMPLTLEY different readings.
It is my understanding that the tuning is recommended to properly dial in the VE (volumetric efficiency) tables. The VE tables tell the rest of the system how much air is going through your motor. The system then uses this info along with the O2 readings to dial in the AFR.
This being said, it is also said that changing just the air cleaner is not that big a deal. It is when you change both the air cleaner AND the exhaust that volumetric efficiency really changes.
Thanks all for the assistance and thoughts.
I want the bike to breath better and vent better.
Just couldn't understand the dealer advise.
I'll check out fuelmoto.
