I had two back operations in 95, the H-D Sundowner is what works for me. I have had a
Sargent seat that I put 120 miles on, and went back to the Sundowner seat because it
has more lower back support. I tried the Sargent with a back rest, still not what I was
looking for. Good luck on your hunt for that perfect seat.
I have had several spinal surgeries and am fused in both my lower back (L4/5) and in my neck. There are so many threads out there on seats and so many different opinions on what is the best seat out there....the truth is you may end up trying a couple in order to get it right, and you will most likely have to have some kind of custom work done on it anyway, no matter what you end up with. I have tried many seats, including Mustangs and C&C Customs. The best seat I had that did not require any additional work was a Mustang Solo with Backrest. I currently have a C&C Solo with backrest and it's ok so far, but harder than I'm used to. You'll find the Mustang to be somewhere in the middle with regard to hard/soft......I've heard Corbin's are very firm, and I've heard that the Saddlemen's products can be too soft but I have not had either of those, so just what I've read--bottom line is do your research, but realize you really won't know until you're sitting on one for a hundred miles if it's going to work for you. Also, remember that they all have break in periods and what might not feel great at first might just be fine after a few long rides. If you have any riding buddies with different seats maybe ask if you can try them out, keeping in mind your height, inseam and weight issues and how much reach you need. Just my two-cents worth as someone who has the same lower back problems....good luck!
I had an Ultimate on a vtx I had. It was nice. I think that the sundowner I use when riding with the wife is just as comfortable especially with a backrest. She has a dehydrated disc problem. The combination of Ohlins 3-3s and the sundowner has worked well for us. She can ride all day now, no pain, numbness, or tingling in her legs or back. I have a C&C fastback that I use when riding solo. I've done 800 mile days with it (and a backrest) comfortably.
