Question Drive Belt Squeak/Noise, Fact Or Fiction?

I just brought in a 2012 Road Glide for some warranty work and the 1,000 service (but it only had 630 miles).
One of the warranty issues was it has a squeak/rubbing noise in the drive belt.
I was told by the service manager at the HD dealership it was normal due to Harley had changed the material they are making the new drive belts out of.
I was told to just drive it and the noise will go away.
Has anyone else here experienced this same issue and what was the end result?

I had a similar problem with my 2011 Road Glide Ultra, after checking with 3 dealers the last one took a rag with some WD-40 sprayed on it, rolled the back wheel and rubbed the rag on the belt. The noise was gone for a short time but came back and went away as belt wore in. Hope that helps your worries.

Mine did when new. It disappeared at about 2000 miles.

I had a Kaw with that problem and on it some could be adjusted so the belt rode to the middle of the pully, not the edge. Another temporary fix is take a candle, and as you spin the rear wheel, "lube" the side of the belt with the candle.

Usually caused by a mis-aligned rear pully or an overly tight belt. As suggested, rubbing both edges of belt with soap or a wax bar will give temporary relief from the squeaking.

If you suspect the belt rubbing on the flanges of the rear pulley, mark both inside flanges with a thick felt pen then ride. The marker will be erased where the belt rubs against the flange(s).
I also had to adjust the belt when my bike came out of the crate.

Yes, I was told adjustment is an issue with new Harley bikes but the service manager insisted it was just the new belt material making the noise and not an adjustment problem. He said he had the same issue on a bike of his own and it took him about 1500 miles for it to go away.

I searched for a road-side "belt repair kit" and found none; then I purchased a spare belt and discovered recent belts were made from a very stiff compound material that does not compare to common rubber belts. This is just to say that if the new belt rubs, it will eat through the mild steel flanges in no time.

I don't think anyone is going to change a touring belt along side the motorway. That's a major operation.

If it is your belt and not the rear flex drive pulley it is because you are keeping it too clean. Seriously (if I can be? HA) If you read the belt service manual inspection it appears a new belt comes with a drive lube. (last long enough for you to get 50 miles or 1 week away from dealer. If the flex (always use a gage..$10-15 am Amazon) is correct, dust it with talcum (baby power) The noise will go away. After a few applications it will stay away until a good cleaning with soap and water. I believe after 10K or so it stays away from me experience but I rarely use soap and water. Back when mine was doing it was when I was on narrow streets with buildings on both sides and at slow speed.
