I have heated grips on my 2012 FLSTFB never had any problem. You don't have to plug anything and it is great riding in the rain without gloves during summer.

I've had both and I prefer grips. They get hot as ***** so cold weather riding is a non issue and on cool days, say 45-50, I turn them on and can wear no gloves at all if I want and still have warm hands. The top of your hands getting cold story is bullsh!t.

Really? Must be my imagination. Of course I don't consider 45-50 cold so maybe that is why. Heated grips are useless after about 5 miles in 20* temps. Not to mention the heated (HD) grips on my 11 SG died halfway through the 2011 winter when my bike was about 10 months old. Got them fixed under warranty. Now a year later they quit working again. Only I don't care now, got my heated G3's and all is good.
Heated gear may be a bit of a pain but if you like long rides in the cold its definitely the way to go.

Gerbings heated gloves...period.

Heated grips don't heat back of hand
Heated grips break
Gerbings are guaranteed for life
Gloves allow you to use any grip you want.

I've never had heated grips so don't know how they work (seems like they would just cook your plams plus they add more crap to the bars) but have been plugging in for 20+ years. I seldom ride in the 30s or below around here but ride year round and had a 90 mile one way commute that wasn't a problem on 30 degree dark foggy mornings. When it's below 50 I'm plugged in and can regulate the heat to what ever I want. OK I'm a wimp in my old age, fine.

Well, maybe there's just two types of people out here because the backs of my hands never get cold either. Of course, I always ride with gloves and the grips heat the gloves and keep the whole hand warm. I'm sure heated gloves are better in really cold, subzero weather, but grips are much more versatile and easily good down into the teens - at least for me - and my last set of HD heated grips lasted over 10 years.

I have both gloves are better at keeping your hands warm but heated grips are always there when you need it. If I had to have only one it would be heated gloves, only reason I have heated grips is because it came with the bike.
