Where do you ride??? Rolling down a super slab interstate with stock wheels has never been a. Issue for me.
Ditto riding the Dragon's Tail or North Georgia mountain twistys.
I guess it maybe like audio equipment where persons more tuned than me see a noticeable difference.
This is a bit escoteric for me.
Modern Harleys may ride OK, but they are miles away from what they could be. Lighter wheels and better suspension will give a far better quality ride. Unfortunately the only way of finding that out at present is to spend the extra cash! Esoteric? No - there is plenty of good info out there, but it is not easy to demonstrate as Harley owners are mostly so unadventurous when it comes to change.

No more so "unadventurous" as the MOCO itself! Were it not for the vrod HD would be batting "0" on inovation. Even sadder is the vrod's at a standstill, no new models, what a waste!

I think the company and customers get the bikes they deserve! On the other hand the MoCo has survived a very long time, so I suppose I shouldn't be too critical, especially having owned their products for almost 40 years now!
I have a Deuce rear wheel and that is also hollow. Harley wheels have been made in Australia for a long time now (I first noticed that on a V-Rod) and they are obviously clever manufacturers. As an engineer I would guess they are cast, as are yours.
Not an answer but my bike had the original steel spoke wheel. Got the star mounted and Metzler tire complete for $100 used from a friend. He was changing his wheels and ask me if I wanted it. Though it looked heavy but said yes. Turns out it's completely thin wall casting and lbs. lighter then my original. Felt much better on my bike and I learned Harley and the dealer did not have the wheel balance correctly with the last three tires or maybe it's just the Met tire runs with less buzz. It has never been balanced. I personalty think if you can cut it 7-10l bs you will fill it in the rebound over bumps but do not think you will be able to measure it in speed or fuel mileage except in a very controlled exact same conditions test. (not real word driving conditions)
