I'm thinking of stock head unit. Boom audio fronts and rears in bag lid. Powered by a hogtunes amp. But it feels as though I'm spending a lot for a little. What about the rockford 300x2 or 300x4 can I run this setup. I'm so confused. Especially with 2 ohm 4 ohm, 2 channel 4 channel. Etc.

I believe the boom stuff is 2 ohm so no ya can't use a 300x4 with it. I'm not a fan of RF amps or Boom stuff but plenty of folks run them. If ya are gonna do 4 speakers, do a 4 channel amp so ya can fade front to rear. Arc & JL make quality amps that will fit in your fairing which along with some quality speakers like focal, hertz or polk will rock!

If going the direction of the Arc, and Focal we can help and get you better than retail pricing as a Forum Member. We have found a line level converter goes along way to making your OEM HD radio work with a high end system. I would recommend either the Stage II PC, or Stage III KRC line which will put you at about $630.00 or $899.00 complete. Meaning Speakers, Amp, Line level Converter,RCA's Speaker Adapters, Power Harness, Matched Fuse & Holder. The only thing left is the tools and you to install. No running all over town getting all these things.

We also have a new radio coming out in June that is not a converted car stereo. It will be full water proof , and IP-66 compliant. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_housing/ip66.htmThe radio will have USB locked in the Radio, (WATERPROOF), and USB in your bag. Either will allow playing of any I device, or MP3 player Android and so on. Exact radio opening size for HD fairings and plug and play operation. All handcontrols will work as well. Color LCD Display, Unit should retail around $600.00. We will give more details as we get them. Far better than the old Dragonfly Radio Package.

I did hog tunes tweeter pod with J&M rokkers and J&M amp. Sounds good but got better when I changed the windshield height from stock to 8". It cut the wind noise down.

Exwrestler; I was in the exact same situation as you a few months back, I chose a 2 speaker set up in the fairing only. I can only speak from my experience, but here is what i did after hours and hours of research here on the HD Forums:
Rockford Fosgate PBR 300x2 ($145 - Ebay *its even cheaper now)
J&M Rokker XTC 7.25" speakers ($259 - Ebay, incls adapters and acoustic foam)
Amp Mounting bracket ($60 - from forum member Scott Ezzel - QUALITY!)
2 x 7 foot of 10AWG power wire for power/ground ($8 at car audio store)
30 Amp inline fuse holder ($4 - Radio Shack)
30 Amp Fuse ($2 - Radio Shack)
Total cost = $478
Simple install, Im NOT a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but i got the tank off and ran the power and ground both to the battery.
My system is loud and crystal clear at 80m/hr on the I5 /405 in So Cal
PM me if you want some install tips - i can highly recommend this set up for the ease of install and the $$
PS - the PBR 300x2 is a 2 ohm stable amp, will run 2 or 4 ohm speakers (Rokkers are 2 Ohm) I went 2 ohm (personal preference) and my amp pumps 198w per channel as per its individual spec sheet from Rockford Fosgate, if i was to couple 4 ohm speakers with this amp the out put would cut the wattage in 1/2 so I would get 99w per channel.
This is a fun DIY upgrade - dont be scared run at it!

I wanted to keep it simple with just a straight upgrade of the amp and speakers so I put an Arc Audio MPAK 6 in the RG and I'm happy with the results.

So can I run a rockford 300x2 for the fronts which I will go with j&m fronts and another rockford 300x2 for rear bags. I can get a set of boom audio lids and speakers for cheap from a friend. I think he want $250 for the lids and speakers. Or should I run a hogtunes amp? Or run fronts off head unit and rears with a rockford 300x2 he also has a hogtunes 40.4 I think that's the model? It's a 4 channel hogtunes amp

"In my opinion" don't use the Hog Tunes at all. If the RF and J&M has a sound you are happy with, cool they should work together. One to the J&M fronts, and one too the Boom rears. If you are going to stay with the Boom speakers in the rear I would be easy on the gains and crossover. THe Boom stuff is not really meant for a lot of power and since there is probably no warranty, it would suck to blow them up.
Leave nothing on deck power once you start amping as you will not even here them.
I would still however get a Line Level Converter to help clean up the sound if using the OEM head unit. Dirty in gets Dirty out.

Good Luck!!

I went with the arc 125 amp and focal pc165 speakers. All plug and play less then an hour start to finish. Very happy with the results and very reasonable.
