Upgrade my System?
Stay away from the PBR300x4...
Yes - you can run the PBR 300x2's, one for the J&M's up front and another for the bag lids, this would be gr8.
However, if you're dead set on a 4 speaker set up, consider the Sound Stream Nano 4 channel amp, its very reasonably priced, and gives you 4 channels at 125w per channel at 2 ohm load. This amp will fit in your fairing, and you'll save the extra coin from not buying the 2nd PBR 300x2 and furthermore save on space taken up in siting this 2nd amp, just food for thought - I personally would go for the SS if I wanted a 4 speaker set up.
If you choose the PBR 300x2 below is my set up with the J&M Rokkers:
*Freq set at 80Hz
*Gain set at 4
*Cross over set at HP (High Pass) - not AP (All Pass)!! - AP has been reported to over heat the amp and possibly cause failure at some point.
Another note on the PBR 300x2 install is to ground it to the negative battery terminal!! NOT the ground at the forks - other forum members did this and have blown amps.
The PBR 300x2 is loud, clear and crisp with more than satisfactory base response (remember its a Harley, not a home theater!) I have suffered from no clipping and no heat issues running the PBR 300x2 in this configuration and set up.
The J&M Rokker XTC's do a great job with this little, powerful amp.
Others here may chime in on the heat from the PBR line of Rockford Fosgates, I can only speak from my experience and the 300x2 with my set up is fine, no heat,no clipping and no distortion until about 4/5th of HK head unit volume.... but well before that volume your ears are bleeding, your eyes are squinting and your Mrs will think you've had a stroke!
I would agree that the PBR 300x4 DOES GET TOO HOT - I wouldn't buy this amp, I'd choose the Sound Stream Nano over the pbr 300X4
Check Ultranutz's posts on the SS - he is an AMAZING source of info, and i think he agrees that the PBR 300x2 is a gr8 amp for a 2 speaker set up, but the SS is the way to go for a solid cool running 4 channel amp at a gr8 price.
Good luck buddy, let us know what you decided on!
Just take your time with the install, do your install research here on the forums, oh and dont forget to have 12 or so of your "best friends" on ice as installation fluid to stay hydrated during the process.. (this is PARAMOUNT!!)
PM me if you need any tips installing - happy to help you out mate.
