I am also a user of the aluminum foil, the heavy duty is a bit more stiff so not so prone to crinkle up. Even so, still no such thing as a dry or clean filter change on the 96. Ultimately went to the Sta-bo front engine mount as the urethane is supposed to be impervious to oil. So far, so good.
If the filter had left hand threads, rotating it would sling the oil onto any tray rather than away from it as happens now.

The hole punch method only helps reduce the spill, it doesn't stop it as a lot of oil is still in the filter when it comes off. I punch two holes, both in the very end of the filter. One at the very bottom edge and one at the top. I put my plastic tray I made under the filter before I punch the holes to guide the oil into the drip pan. Patience is the key here, it takes awhile to drain so give it time. Then push the blue paper shop towels under the filter with a long screwdriver to help catch the oil from the spin off.
Like I said, not all the oil is going to be caught so you will still need to do some cleaning.
