Default RE: Installing inner fairing

Hi Twohats,

I installed a painted inner fairing on my 03 ultra it and although it was quite a lot of work, it wasn't difficult.
All in all it took me 8 hours of work. (disassembly and assembly)
Here's a picture of the endresult and a link to a post I made when it was just finished. https://www.hdforums.com/m_1186888/tm.htm

I also have some pictures of the 'interior' of the fairing. If you're interested, let me know.

Greetz, Bartje

I've done a couple of these.. The biggest mistake you can make is to take it to far apart. Look it over before you start taking it apart. A lot of the wiring will not need to be disconnected. I took digital photos before I took it apart. Printed them out & used em to put it back together.

Have your local tech show you how to get the ignition off so you can get the lower piece off.

If you have basic mechanical abilities you can do this...

Are you buying a painted inner(Expensive) or having your inner painted (realitivley cheap)?
If you are having yours painted they just mask off the trim ring thats installed for around the radio.

Steelcity,
My bud just ordered one for his SG from harley and i am getting his.I just have to repair the hole where his mirrors was.No big deal for my painter.I work at a GM dealer and one of my body shops will do the work no charge.I guess i should take advantage of it while i can.I might just put new bezels on.

Hi Twohat,

Here are some pictures of the 'interior' of the fairing.
About the cables, you only have to remove throttle and clutch cables from the handlebar. Then you can pull the top halves of the cables (3) through the holes in the fairing.
The electrical wiring can stay in place, just as the handlebar and brakeassembly and brakeline.
You just have to remove the ignition **** (not the whole lock), a smaal plate under the ****, two bolts and disconnect a large electrical connector to remove the inner fairing cap.
When you disassemble the inner fairing try to leave as much as possible in place. Of course you have to take the radio and gauges, speakers and cigarette lighterout (bezels stay on the gauges and radio) of the innerfairing but that's it.
Just loosen all the brackets from the inner fairing and leave them on the bike. You have to loosen/remove the bolts that hold them to the fork but all wires that are attached to them will keep them in place. That gave me enough room to take off and put on the inner fairing.

Good luck with the project and show us some pictures when it's finished.

Greetz, Bartje
