Default Upper engine mount??

When did HD add the upper engine mount to the front cylinder head on the FLH's?? I have a 08' FLHX and it has,.... well had one from the factory. I have a set of heads from a previous build that I had sent to be modified for the front cylinder head, upper mount. I now have to slightly mod the bracket to place the mount back on the head...however was curious when HD added the upper mount. Any known problems with the bikes that dont have the mount ?? Its an ugly piece and have thoughts of leaving it hang on the peg board wall.

If you are talking about not installing it, I don't think I would do that. The engine, transmission, and swingarm are connected so as the only movement between them is the up & down between the swingarm and trans. Since this unit is rubber mounted to the frame, if you don't install that link your rear tire will be able to move from the vertical relative to the frame. The earlier models had the link attached to what is now the horn bracket. Moving it back to that location would require welding to the frame top tube.

Moved from between the heads to the front in 08 as dawg said to accommodate the bigger tank.

As mentioned above leaving it on the peg board would be a bad option. what your referring to is the engine stabilizer link w/ mount. A rubber mounted non counter balanced engine wouldnt be very happy without it

Hmmmm, well I guess the ugly piece gets bolted back on. Cant be that much push pull on the arm as it's only two 5/16 bolts that attach to the front head to hold the bracket on.

When I posted the last time I was thinking new frame with four mounts, not '08 frame with three. With that frame I can guarantee you to have problems if that link is left out. On the '08 I think that the link is an adjustable Heim joint. Not only does it do vertical stabilization, it does lateral stabilization also. It won't be a good day for you if you try to ride without it.

You should read my thread on bagger wobble, then you will better understand how your bike works. Your engine/trans/rear wheel are held in the frame at just three points, of which that head stabilizer is one. Take a leg off a three-legged stool and what happens?!

And that's why, in addition to the three factory points, I ride with the TruTrack unit for that additional point of lateral stabilization where it is so badly needed.
