Default Cruise control problem 2001 FTLRSEI2

My cruise started acting erratic during a long trip last year. At first it didn't set cruise every time I tried to set or resume. It might take a couple of attempts. Later on the trip it dropped out for no particular reason and I could occasionally get it to reset, but it would drop out after a few miles. I finally gave up and just rode. Three times the bike suddenly re-engaged cruise that caught me by surprise. It finally dawned on me that I still had the cruise on-off switch "on" so I turned it off to prevent any more surprises.

After the trip I pulled out my service manual and attempted to run the bike through the inoperative cruise diagnostics (7.2 in the diagnostic manual). It does not get past the first step which is to turn the cruise on-off switch to "on", hold the set/resume switch to SET, and turn the ignition switch to "on". The cruise indicator is supposed to illuminate as long as the set/resume is held to SET. If you let go of the set/resume switch, the cruise indicator should extinguish. Mine stays illuminated. If I move set/resume to RESUME, the cruise indicator extinguishes. If I let go of the set/resume switch the cruise indicator illuminates again. Because of this, I cannot go any further into the self diagnostic.

Additionally, I cannot perform the dropout diagnostic, no codes will come up.

So then I walked all the way through the continuity and voltage checks outlined in self test 7.5 and everything checks out. The manual provides no direction to troubleshoot this particular problem.

Any ideas are welcome as I don't know what to look for at this point. I really thought it would be a bad set/resume switch or loose connection but everything checked out.

Thanks for any assistance!!

Eric

I have an 07 Ultra and I have had similar problems with my cruise. I run the bike with the throttle kick-out switch unplugged. If you have one on your bike its on the throttle cable right side of the head on the frame. Small wire plugs into a pick-up on the cable. Just unplug it and ride your bike, the cruise will only kick out with a pull on the brake or clutch. Hope that helps.

You may want to check your rear stoplight switch. Since your cruise can be switched off by hitting the brakes, when the switch goes bad the cruise will not work. Just an idea to check.

My cruse stopped working. Turned out to be my rear brake switch. Not only did my cruse not work, all my brake lights were on all the time. Simple check is turn your key on and see if your brake lights are on.

Hope this helps.

I have no speedo to check codes. Can not having a speedo hooked up be why my cruise will not work? I did the cable lash reset and it resets like it should , all lights light up but still can't engage my cruise on the road. I tried unplugging the roll off function like I had to when I bought the bike but since bought new cables and it worked flawlessly. I did nothing over the winter except a yaffe tank and front end swap to put on my 23" wheel.
