+1 on the helicoil
I had to helicoil one of the 2 passenger floorboard holes. This thing repairs stripped threads in a few minutes and it's stronger than the original thread.

Heli-Coils work well but I've found the Time-Sert is easier to use in many applications.

Keen-Sert is also another viable option.

You'll never have a problem with a correctly installed HeliCoil, I've used coarse, fine, metric, and standard up to 1 1/4" on all kinds of applications, never had one fail. Never used Time Serts but they require the exact same actions to install, so I don't know how they are any faster.

I didn't say they were any faster ... But I did say they were easier to use ... and I was addressing the fact that the OP was probably a novice ... and the Time-Sert won't unwind the way a Heli-Coil can ... You did "qualify" your response with "correctly installed" so I'd say you've had a Heli-Coil or two "unwind" in your lifetime ... I was offering the OP a more "Fool Proof" option. Of course, what do I know I've only been in the Automotive business my whole life, and I'm only 63. And as your signature says "Learn from the mistakes of others; less stressful and it'll save you some money" ... that is what you recommend, isn't it?

He is correct, this or Keenserts would be a better option. The helicoil is good for parts that are not going to be taken apart, but in your case, if you have to replace a gasket or do some work in the primary over time, the timesert or keensert would be a better choice.

Really? Never had one pull out... I've used timeserts for critical applications like a case stud, but IMO its a waste of money for something like this unless you already own the kit for that size. I've had a heli-coil in on of my primary holes for around 70k miles on my EG, more times than I care to remember removing the cover and not once has it unwound or pulled out...

Not trying to take anything away from Timeserts, they are solid and absolutely necessary some places but its overkill for this use. For "sucking" there sure are a hell of a lot of industries that use helicoils for threaded holes in aluminum parts without the 100% failure rate you claim.
