I have been back on Motorcycles and with a new Harley in 95 - I have learned over the past 18 years - sometimes as riders - we are our worst enemy at times..
**** off a LEO / fail the attitude test and get ready for him/her to FIND something to write you up on.
I look at it this way...i love the sound of loud pipes.Others do not. To each his/her own i guess. I believe that for the most part,as long as you "behave" you probably will be left alone. Maybe im incorrect though. Wasnt it Ricky Nelson who sang something like "seems you cant please everyone,so ya gotta please yourself" Man was he right!!!
That's the problem, you buy an aftermarket exhaust then you have to conform to the anti noise crowd or else, damn I'm fortunate to live in Mississippi.
Never heard of anyone getting a ticket with custom pipes unless they are some dumbass stright pipes,I run a pro pipe on a 103 been all over Ca no tickets just thumbs up from the police.
I have been all over CA with V&H pro pipes, big shot longs (loud), and true duals and nothing but thumbs up from officers. Just don't be a jerk. There are probably more custom bikes and modified exhaust systems in CA then any other state in the union. SJ Ron
Send you pipes into American Custom, they will drill them out and weld in a flange so you can attach one of their baffles. Get the mid range baffles, you can drill those out to your liking, they can be louder and still be legal with the stamp.
By the way, in every state I have been in within recent memory, all the cops have aftermarket exhaust of some type, all much louder than stock. Is that how it is in California? Is the noise law just for us or do the cops live by it too?

I followed and commented on this law before it went into effect (fought it).
There was already noise laws that were not being enforced, also to throw a wet towel over the entire state to fight noise on so-cal's trendy beach towns riders frequent did not sit well with me. What segment of the riders have now caused problems for all the others that respect high concentrations of people trying to relax? Existing Noise Law
So, Le pulls a loud bike over, meters him, then add's the tix for unapproved exhaust components if they are not on the list. Even though the new law can be applied to only bikes built and sold in california since 12/31/12 it does not protect older bike (12/31/12 and back) from Noise Laws, even if one's bike is and antique.
I live and ride in the boonies, but, even here weekend out-of-towners visit and want to relax.
I'll reserve opening her up for where it won't intentionally offend.
If it wasn't broke don't fix it. Thumbing our collective noses at behavior that encourages harmony brought this on, and I suppose it was fewer than 10% of riders that brought this on for everyone.
Just my
I've lived in Southern Cali for all of my life and been riding for over 20 years, street bikes and now a 09 SG. I got a ticket on my street bike in the early 90's for excessive noise with my STOCK exhaust. Fought it and won. Cop was just being an a-hole. My SG now has Dresser Duals and CFR's. I respect everyone so I make sure I don't rap my throttle to disturb my neighbors or attract unecessary attention. Never been ticketed for loud exhaust and If I do get a ticket, luckily I have several Cop buddies that can easily write it off. As what other guys stated on here, if you don't act like an a-hole, then Cops won't trip.
Ride Safe!!!
Peace
