My first mod on my bike will be a windshield. No i'm not buying one from the dealer, so will not be doing the demo thing. I want the wind off of me so which windshield and what inch would you recommend for a 6'3 fella? Ordering one off the net today but don't know exactly what i need, suggestions...
Windshields are like oil - very controversial and everyone has very strongly held opinions.
My experience is that you will have to spend some money on trial and error and become an expert on selling stuff on craigslist.
Many people swear by the Madstad but its polarizing because many people dont like the look of it.
Personally I have a 13" Mako medium tint from LRS and I'm happy with it, but being 6'3" you probably will have to go taller. The 15" is the same height as the stock windshield on a Road Glide Ultra, for reference.
As Keithhu said, go to the RG forum, most people there seem to think the Mad Stad keeps the most wind off of you. I have a LRS Mako it works well also, in fact a little too much for me, I enjoy a little wind.
Also check out National Cycle VStream products for your bike. I have their 12 incher and its just rite, im 5'10". You would probably want a 14 incher. Oh yes, they are literally bullet proof.
Well i started off cheap with a Memphis Shades 17 incher and will be here Friday. If this doesn't work i'll try the next cheapest in line till i get it right. Madstad makes a great looking shield but more complicated, not to mention more dough, trying to stay simple at first.
...... Road Glide shields are a special challenge.
..... differing individual preferences re: airflows, combined w/the increased distance of the shield from the rider leaves room for lots of variables.
....... i went with a tall Harley shield 5-6 yrs ago & luckily it's worked for me.
.... Clearview & others make good shields with curved lips that do a great job of directing the air.
........ i'm 6'2 & look right over the lip of mine, so @ 6'3 ... looking over the top should be even less of an issue than it is for some.
........ once your wind management is worked out, riding one'a these is a dream.
......... oh yeah, ...... welcome to the Secret Society !
