Any good quality reputable synthetic is fine.
Valvoline, castrol, V-twin, mobil, amsoil

as long as they meet or beat the manufacturers specs your warranty will remain intact.
Same with your filters.

I've been running Castrol and or valvoline in all my bikes, and cars / trucks since the 60's.
Never had an oil related issue.

Regarding Formula+, I can't see spending $6.50/qt. for what's basically an unexceptional 10w30 semi-synthetic motor oil with a dab of EP for tranny use and little else. I think you can do as well with a cheap fossil oil at Walmart for $1/qt. The primary isn't rocket science, and the only function for the oil is to cool the primary chain and clutch plates. I've heard of people who've forgotten to fill the primary after draining and after running the bike for a week sustained no discernible damage. I'm not recommending this, of course, but the point is that most anything will work, whether motor oil, ATF, MTL, or whatever. At the moment I'm using Castrol GTX 20w50. It works fine and is only $2/qt.

FWIW, I would never use Formula+ in the tranny, despite HD's recommendation. Use a quality synthetic in the engine (15w50 or 20w50) and 75w90 gear oil in the tranny. Heavier gear oil in the tranny shouldn't hurt anything, although I'm not sure we need it.

Amsoil motorcycle 20W50 in all three holes. 15,000 happy miles! 75,000 miles on my 01!

Got better things to do than worry about oil! Go with what is recommended by HD, use a good 100% synthetic , then you can sleep better at night!!!!!

My .02 worth!

[sm=exactly.gif]Primary oil is there "primarily" to cool the clutch and add the minor lubrication the chain needs. Don't waste your money on expensive synthetic in there.

I use Mobile 1:20w50 in the motor and Mobil 1: Syn Gear lube 70w95 in the tranny. Any good quality 10w40in the primary (whatever I have on hand for my cars). For all you youngsters out there, H-D's original dino primary oil (no longer available) was 10w40.
