You can use the lighter socket as an accessory plug, BUT, you must use a test light or VOM and verify the socket is wired correctly. Many reports of bikes leaving the factory with the wires reversed inside the fairing. No problem for a lighter, but ugly for electronics.

The center pin should be hot, the outer sleeve ground.

Oh, and be careful don't ding your tank on sharp turns if the plug sticks out very far.

Us mine for GPS and mp3. Make sure your cig lighter is wired correctly from the factory. When they wire it for a cigarette lighter, it doesn't matter how they attach the hot or ground wires, so the wires may be reversed. If you are using it for a power port, it matters a lot. Use a test light or a multimeter and make sure the center post inside the light socket is hot and the housing is ground. This can be done without removing your outer fairing with a probe style test light.

I went with this from 3brpowersports.com. PNP directly to the accessory harness under your seat.

They don't want you to use it for an accessory because the cable that would plug into the socket could/would bind and/or get caught and possibly cause a steering problem !!

The lighter plug is fine for low amp draw items like a USB charger. Just think what kind of Amps are required to heat up a piece of metal to red hot (cig lighter) and keep your draw below that limit. Clearance with the tank is a bigger issue.

I run a GPS, power to the HogTunes 40-4 amp AND the HD powered internal fairing hidden antenna off of the cigar lighter plug.

No Probs!
