Before anyone crucifies me, I did look for the answer and didn't find a perfect fit to my question. I have the Screaming Eagle Air Filter kit and Bassani slip on pipes and a dealer Stage 1 tune. Would I have to have the bike re-tuned if I change out the header pipe to one without cats or would the existing Harley tune work?
There is a significant difference in exhaust gas velocity when the cat is removed. You will be allowing potentially more air thru the pump in that condition.
I would retune. That dealer stage one download is a waste of money when with just a little more you can get a tuner that you control.
Since ya got the dealer download I'd get it tuned no matter what. But really the only way to have a proper running bike is to have a proper tune with each change. Most folks don't....
a cheap fix is some xied's...can pick them up used for $50 to $60 bucks. will do the trick until you do cams/dyno the bike. at that time you will want a better tuner. any moco download will take the bike back to the super lean EPA requirements.
This is what is in your header the CAT think about how much restriction that is. You remove it you are going to have a freer flowing header. It will run a bit leaner.
Myself I would want a good header like Jack pots 2-1-2 from fuel moto VS gutting a shock one. Gutting the stock header cause a bit of torque loss.
In any case tune is going to be the best option how you do it depends on you.
Dyno expensive but effective and your stuck with that tune.
Power vision one time cost Maps can be changed in a flash.
Cost is reasonable . You spend 20+on a bike do the job right ride long and happy.
Check out Fuel moto site sponsor has some great option.
If you stick to the 2 in 1 in 2 setup you probably will be ok. If it surges at cruise speed or pops any then better get some sort of enrichment. If you put 2 into 1 or True duals you probably will need either xied's or a tuner as they will lean out the cruise area and the top end too.
I was planning on getting the Bassani header and retaining my Bassani slip-ons. Can a tuner override the HD tuning or would the dealer need to return it back to stock before I use a tuner?
Two types of tuners piggy back and those that write to the ECM. Piggy backs basically alter ECM data do not change it. Ok but not the best .
True tunes rewrite the the ECM .
In the case of the Power vision .
First it saves a copy of the stock HD tune so tyou can out it back any time
Then you can start with a supplied map that matches your bike .
You can then try different maps to see what fits your needs best, it only takes 45 seconds to change the map.
If you chose even with the narrow band sensor you can run auto tune a few steps involve but it works. Few street rides with reasonable mods need to change over to wide band senors.
The power vision has come a long way it is IMO on the top of the list for most riders.
Check out Fuel moto site they sell the Power Vision by dnyojet. They offer a good deal and you can not beat the map support they supply if you buy from them.
Currently Fuel Moto's map is the one I prefer over the auto tune and the one supplied by Dynojet.
Smitty901, I assume that the programmer works the same way as a programmer works for cars. There are all types of attachment hardware that is sold with that Power Vision unit. I am assuming that once the tune is installed, I do not need to keep it connected correct?
