running i have what sounds like a loose fuel cap but i checked it and the cap is tight . Should i replace the cap or should i be looking some where else for my cause?

all the time, sometimes ?

what speed, what rpm ?

to track things down you have to figure out the conditions under which you have a problem...it is RPM related or road speed related ?

etc.

could the dash be loose ? the gas tank, something else ?

Why replace the cap if it is tight?! It may be something else in that area. Keep looking.

I was chasing a gremlin rattle for months. I put a piece of tape on my gremlin bell and the noise stopped. Relocated the bell aft no more rattle.

What does a loose fuel cap sound like? Do you happen to have the push-button fuel door?

If you have a Road King, it sounds like a buzzing noise when you get into higher RPMs, you can stop it by putting your hand on it. I had this problem when I had a Road King, its why I went to the flush mount, drove me nuts

the rattle only happens from 1/2 tank of fuel and below does not happen when it is over a 1/2 a tank.

I'd guess that the fuel pump or hose is contacting the tank when level is low.
or a pinholed fuel line is spraying in the tank

but that's a guess
