I have owned both in a '01 95". Go with 551's and the gears. I kept the 203's and replaced the tensioners once and had to
Replace the tensioners again so went gears. The 551's pull like a freight train. I recommend a PCIII

Can anyone explain why the geared cams are so much more expensive? Is it because of the machining required? Also, while I'm in there, should I upgrade the cam plate and oil pump?

If I were keeping the bike and wanted to spend a little money in the cam chest area I would install some Andrews 21 or 26 cam's with gaterman lifters and if the oil pump needed replaced then do the SE upgrade cam plate kit with the install that has the upgraded oil pump. If your going to do a 95" kit then put in 204 SE cams with the rest mentioned.
You want need anything else, trust me unless you want to spend a lot of money.

The MFG. are adding a gear to each cam that must be in very close tolerances to the other gear compared to a chain drive that is a bit more forgiving.
Others that know more about the oil pump and cam plate will chime in...I would say it depends on the condition of the plate...As to the oil pump??? if it works fine why change it unless you need more oil flow...
