I've been wearing Skull candy or Beats by Dre ear buds with my ipod for about 5 years they have several different rubber inserts to fit different size ears so there snug. I don't always have music playing but keep them in and have never had any problems at all.
I have 2 pair of custom fit earplugs from Ear Inc. They were rather pricy but they are really nice. Problem is finding someone that makes them. There is a guy that goes to the gun shows around here that made my first pair. The second pair I got got directly from Ear Inc at the shot show. One pair is for riding and one pair I keep in my range bag.
I use YurBuds from http://yurbuds.com/technology/, they lock into place and don't slip out when putting on my full face helmet. I use the ones that are shown on the link provided, they make a lot of different style too. Converted my comm headset to accept that plug to use instead of helmet speakers.
Being half deaf, I wear plugs to protect what hearng I have left. Truthfully, I like listening to my bike better with them in. I get all the music from my pipes, without listening to the motor and tranny. Reduces wind noise dramaticly. I started with the foam ones from the guns shop....but now use a pair that you mold to your exact ear canal. They pop in and out and fit very comfortably. Another plus is that the custom ones will last forever...they came with a little velor baggie to store them in.
I hate wind notice and I wear a 3/4 helmet. I've tried the foam ear plugs but the don't stay in my ears. Sooner or later they get loose. But I've never had any side effects from the noise. I'm more worried about it damaging my hearing.
Your not putting them in correctly. When inserting ear plugs you need to pull back on your ear, open them up a bit then insert. I see a lot of people not putting them in correctly, once in they should not be sticking out much. I've been using ear plugs for over 20 years, wore them working in a load factory. Oh and yes I wear them on long rides.
I have tinnitus and always were earplugs. If I don't my right ear drives me nuts. The sound of the pipes don't bother me a bit, it is the wind noise. I can still hear the pipes and the radio without any problem. I'm using the plugs from Surefire.
Like others, I wear them all of the time. Whether a 2-mile ride or a 200-mile ride. I have custom made ear plugs that I had made at a motorcycle show a few years ago. Wouldn't ride without them.
