Hard to go wrong with Held gloves. Expensive but buy once, cry once.
I picked up a used set off craigslist. Great options like Kangaroo leather palms, carbon fiber knuckles, full gauntlets, and brass sliders on the lower palm/wrist area.
The thing about gloves is, you really want something substantial between you and the cheese grader we call asphalt. Well, that's my opinion. I've seen it first hand.

I have a pair of well worn GripSwell and they are great. Full fingered, short gloves with perforations.
