Well I just finished installing 12" bars on my 'Glide. Around town they are great, but on my morning commute today my right had fell asleep. This was after about 25 miles at 70mph. Going to try and rotate them back towards the seat and see if this helps. if it doesn't I'm going to have to find a different set of bars.
I have 18 inch apes and ride all day with no discomfort and no problems. 14 and 12 inch bars will just make you more comfortable and should not generate fatigue or problems. Like any new riding position, it will take a couple of days to make the adjustment.
I'm 5'7 and previously had 14' Wild One's on my Wide Glide. I was going to put 14's on my Ultra but ended up choosing 12.5 Wild One's.One of my reasons was this was my first bike with a fairing and I wasn't sure about what effect the extra weight on the front end would have. Another thing was 12.5's put your hands just to the top of the fairing but the wind still seems to go over them. Anything higher puts your hands in the wind so it might be a consideration for those riding in cold weather. I know a lot of riders seem to push the bars forward but for me I have mine more in line with the fork. I have lower back issues and I need to lean back into my backrest. It really does feel like having power steering with apes.I found that 12.5's are just right when doing a full lock turn anything higher would be to much of a stretch. Someone made a comment their hand went to sleep going down the highway at 70. Remember the old rule of thumb about hand height and blood flow. One thing nice about the touring bikes is many have cruise so you can move your hands around when needed. One final comment in regards to brand,my reason for Wild One's was because they have more pullback than most.
Best mod I've done to my bike to date. I ordered 14" from J&P and they botched my order and sent 16's instead. I'm glad they did. At 6'4" they were the perfect height for me. What I've read about them is true...if you think you want 10's, go with 12's. if you think you want 12's, go with 14's. I think you get the picture. Do your homework tho. Pullback and wrist angle are critical to the comfort level of this mod.
