My '93,'96,'03, and '99 all have/ had them, from the factory. Can't say they do much more then direct air down towards the cylinders. Mine weren't chrome tho.,,

after 500 miles I asked him how the wind was- he said bad, like always...he didn;t know it was there, didn;t notice a difference
what WILL make a difference is fairing adjustable wind deflectors- use them to direct controlled air into the cockpit- that will equalize pressure and there will be less air coming up from below or the sides.
